Are Catalytic Converters interchangeable???
Hey Guys,
I have a 2001 Honda Civic DX and the Cat has gone out, i've been trying to find a replacement cat online but there all pretty steep, pricewise. i'm looking for like a universal fit converter that's around $100 or less. I found lots of converters that said they would fit EX or SI models but can't find any for the DX are any of the other models converters compatible with the DX???
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
TY

I'm not 100% sure...but if yours is the same as mine (04 DX), then your cat is built in to your exhaust manifold.
You would have to either buy and aftermarket exhaust manifold, in addition to an Si or Ex Cat, or buy a replacement (OEM) exhaust and cat (on piece) for your car.

Oh yea...and I might add that the replacement Exhaust manifold/Cat is not cheap...$450+ (http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...NIFOLD+%281%29)
I couldn't see a cat going out so fast on such a new car, so if you are having problems with your car you may want to troubleshoot your situation or ask around on here to see what the problem is. If you are positive it is the problem, it may be cheaper to buy an aftermarket exhaust manifold and cat seperate and fab the holes for both the O2 sensors...But then if you cannot weld, you would have to pay someone to weld...
Maybe others might be able to offer up some more info.

when i got the car it had an ignition coil out and the previous owner didn't exactly take the best care of the car, but from what my local mechanic told me all that excess fuel from the shot ignition coil caused the cat to go, because now my check engine light is on and when i had the codes read, there were 2, it said "inefficient catalyst". they told me the first one was the O2 sensor and the second was the converter.
Any ideas??

I'm not sure if you were able to get the actual codes, but if you can get them and post them up here, I'm sure others could look them up for you and tell you what they are.
Usually (from my experience) a CEL (Check Engine Light) only comes on when it senses something wrong from an electrical component (O2 sensor, ignition coil, various sensors, etc...). I don't really see how a CEL code could determine a faulty cat. I would recommend taking the car to Advanced Auto (or other parts store) and have them scan it (for free) and get the actual codes and post them up here. You may find your problem being something more minor than you previously thought (I'm sure if you were running with a spark plug unhooked it would throw a CEL code).
I'm not perfect and have been wrong before, but you may want to consider this before replacing your exhaust/cat. I don't know if you "know" the mechanic you took your car, or if he's trying to rip you off...

In all honesty your better off gettin a well-know catback with a megan header and test pipe a.k.a. mid pipe
especially if you were going to mod your car and put an exhaust on anyway
