Default oil in spark plugs

so the old plugs were covered in oil. friend says it is my valve cover gasket, or perhaps the seals for the spark plugs, but recommended me replacing both.

But i decided to replace the spark plugs anyway and replaced the oil too. Test drove it around for a good time, then went back home and checked the plugs again, but they were dry.

What does this mean?
