I've been told through more then one person that due to rising liability and more pressure from the insurance companies to make tracks safer, that no sanctioned dragstrip in the country is going to allow ANY DOT approved helmets like they used to and that the new mandate is Snell SA2005. I already know that all NHRA tracks say that any car 9.99 or faster has to run a closed face SA2005 helmet now. Any truth behind the rumors?

Well the main reasons I want to know are...
a) I sell helmets and I need to know who needs what
b) I have at least 10 friends that used to go race with their streetbike helmets, and I want to know if i should fill them in before they make it to the track and have a hard time getting through the gates.

If it is true. Pm me with pictures and etc. I will need one!

for the better part of a full h22a swap it better be. but safety is never something you should skimp on, right? even if you happen to look incredibly bad-*** while doing it.
I'll check my 2008 NHRA (not sport compact) rulebook tonight and let you know. I highly doubt any truth to the rumor. That would be an incredibly big change, but I never assume anything anymore!

$1400 with a 2-3 business day build time. Everyone is made to order. Impact has that style without the air intake on the top, and the Carbon Fiber Super-Sport which can be had for $995.
I dunno how important the weight savings to cost ratio is to the drag racer, but i can speak from experience that anything to make a driver more comfortable, albeit proper seat, nice harness, helpin the driver sweat less, they all lead to faster and more consistent lap times in either circle or road track, and a heavy helmet is definitely the bane of any racer.

Sorry, forgot about this.
The only NHRA rule change for helmets is that 9.99 and quicker must use a full-face helmet. But the SNELL ratings are the same as last year; i.e. M2000 and newer is acceptable. Does not have to be an SA rated helmet until you get to Alcohol Funny Car and stuff like that. 10.00 and slower can still use the open face helmets.
In case there are any first time helmet buyers, any helmet must have the SNELL sticker inside the helmet. Whatever is engraved on the outside doesn't matter to the NHRA tech guy. So before you buy, make sure you know where the sticker is inside.
I just called the office in Glendora to double check with Pat.

thank you for clarifying that. Now does anyone know anything about mandating HANS devices for < 200 mph soon? The only reason i say anything is because it was whispered alot at PRI that they would be going to a 150< or 175< mandate on the HANS and I know 200 or better is already wearing them.

Wouldn't surprise me! But if they do it will be for a head and neck device not just the hans. I don't want to shell out the cash for one but I don't think it would be a bad rule

I think the mandate will probably be SFI 38.1 head and neck restraint, which alot of competitors don't meet.
Well HANS is introducing a less expensive model coming out for the club / weekend racer. With liability going up and most track revenues going down, SCCA club and NASA aren't far away from bringing in a policy like this, if not most of the individual tracks they run at. Its made out of injected plastic instead of CF, but it only weighs about 12 oz. more then the regular model. I believe pricing is going to start at $695. Still saves your life just as good, still SFI 38.1 and FIA approved.
