Default HELP - Q - Windshield replacement after bodywork?

I start by saying that I don't really know that much about bodywork. With that said I recently had the broken windshield on my 92 EG hatch pulled out and no surprise, I found some rust on the 2 lower corners. Not a big deal, so I took it to a local body shop to have the rust cut out and get some new metal patches welded in. When I got it back, I decided It would be a good idea to clean off all the excess urethane from the windshield frame to get it ready for the new one. This also allowed me to clean up some of the nicks and light surface rust. It is all primered now (etching primer) and I need to know if I can use a base/clear finish on the windshield frame. Basically, will a base clear finish be fine for the new urethane to bond to? Is there something else I need to do to allow the urethane to bond properly? Thanks for any help.

Yes a base clear finish will be fine. The window crap sticks to anything. LOL. Get it on your hands and it sticks there for about a week LOL. Get it on anything else and it is there for life hahahahaha. Just about.

Not much of a response...Well I hope I have done it properly because I had the new windshield installed today. The glass guy brushed on some special primer on top of my base/clear to create better adhesion between the glass and body. Anyway I hope it holds up well.

The windshield is a structural part of a unibody car. If the adhesive is applied over very fresh paint that is not near fully cured, there is a possibility of lack of paint adhesion. The adhesive may trap the paint/solvent and not allow the it to cure correctly/adhere and the paint will stick to the adhesive but may not stick to the undercoat. This is why pro painters will tape off the pinch weld where the adhesive is applied, before base/clear if the glass will be installed right after the refinish phase. This is also one of the reasons why they put trace amounts in the adhesive so they can trace back to the shop/user if a lawsuit is applicable and what not. Not to scare you, you probably painted small spots and didn't install the glass asap. This is only in this type of situation though, cured base/clear is still ok.

Trace amounts of what? Never heard of anything like that.

Chemicals, specialty investigators do burn tests and can trace back individual lots of urethane adhesive. Its pretty crazy yet interesting.

Thanks for your help. However I did have to paint the entire edge of the windshield frame (pinch weld area) because there was alot of build up of old urethane and chips from tools and knives etc. I was aware that the new paint would need to fully cure so I gave it 2 and half days of drying time. Hopefully this was enough time...

I just don't see how that is possible since most window installers just buy their window adhesives from a supplier. And the supplier does not put trace chemicals for each individual purchase for every customer into the sealed tubes.

Nononono, if you apply windshield sealant on fresh paint you will have leaks later down the road. Primer is your friend.

The manufacturer puts in the trace amounts not the supplier.

I hope what you're saying is that my paint needed to dry first before the install which it did for 2 and a half days. OMG Primer was used first and then finished with base/clear. Also, before the new windshield went in the glass guy brushed on a special primer to give the urethane a better bond. I really hope it was done right guys. I don't want any trouble/leaks down the road.

yah no lie as before I did not know that it would be a problem on fresh paint. But it has been 2 days and they put primer, I would not worry about it.
I always see the guys brushing some black crap on the areas that were just painted and welded where I did body work, and I never questioned it. Now i know that it is the primer that they brush on. I just never questioned it cause I have helped the window guys put the windows on with the urethane and that stuff is sticky as a ****.
Honestly I did not know that it would be a problem. But 2 days later your clear should be hard enough that even during the curing process it would not cause a problem with leaking. There is just no way. The window guys lay a crap load of that urethane epoxy whatever on.

Sorry I have been drinking if I screwed up my spelling or what not. peace love and.....blah blah blah.
