Default Type R head on a GSR block?!

Sorry, the noobie is back again to ask stupid questions. Would it be better to get a Type R head and put it on my 98 GSR block if its even possible, or would it be better to get cams and all that stuff? Wut would be more efficient and easier and what would be cheaper. Also in picking one, wut else would i have to do. WOuld i need to get a tune for both or so forth.

IMO getting a ITR head is way to expensive. You can keep your GSR head and make some nice power by purchasing some Skunk2 stage 1 or Pro1 cams with an upgraded vavletrain (supertech, skunk2, crower...) with the same money it would cost you to purchase the ITR head. You can also get some head work done which will give you a nice flowing engine.

What are you're plans for the car??

to answer your question...yes the itr head will bolt directly to your block. The type r head is a better head, it flows more air, dual valve springs, lighter valves, and more aggresive cams. As far as costs go, if you can find good prices on all the above mentioned, it'll most likely be cheaper to just buy the parts and build your head. hope that helps

oh okay. HOw much downtime will i have on my car meaning not being able to drive it if i were to get this work done. My plans....i just wannna achieve some power .. probably 200hp or 190 depending. IF i decide to get cams and a complete valvetrain, around roughly how much would it cost with the tune as well. Would i also need to get a new intake manifold? NOw if i decide to get the type r head. I would need to replace my intake manifold for sure right? and would i also need to change my ecu then get it tuned?

ok u r asking a lot of simple questions and not enough searching. but back 2 ur questions it depends on the machinse shop and if u know or can do all the work urself. taking a head off is easy, its butting back 2gether and making sure the timing and everything is in place that may be hard. if u want 190whp u might as well go FI and get a greddy turbo kit but 190hp u will need better cams skunk 2 stage 2, aftermarket intake mani, headers, 2.5 exhaust, p&p head, and if u use certain cams u will have 2 bump up ur compression to get all the power out of them. And yes if u go beyond the basic bolt-ons u will need 2 tune. If u need info hit me up on aim at darkness1582 but b4 u do anything take a few days and do a lot of searching and reading cause u r trying to do 2 much without know what u r getting ur self into.

This should give you an idea of the cost for ITR Head parts.

Putting a Type-R head will lower your compression compared to using the GSR head. This is why I am putting on a Skunk2 IM with 01 ITR cams and springs(plus ARP head studs), it will be almost about the same as having an ITR head. But this is jsut the set-up I've decided to go with, like most other people are saying, you would probably benefit more from keeping the GSR head and doing the aftermarket cams/vavletrain and IM.

On the other hand, it sounds great for boosted applications. Better flow, springs, valves and cams, with lower compression.
You'd need the itr ecu (or a tune), pistons and intake mani to make it worth while n/a.

Here is what you do you get a B20 from japan (i can get one for 450$ and try to find a b16 then put the head of the b16 on the engine and it will help then get cams forged decompresion pistons and get some boost u will have a quik car then and the b20 bolts right in to everything

Simply swapping an ITR head will give you no power (without cams). Not only that but the ITR head requires a PR3 (ITR/B16) intake manifold (which is single stage vs GSR dual stage) and, as mentioned an ECU retune should be performed for a later vtec engagement. For your best bang-for-the-buck, get a good set of cams. This can easily be done in a day. Any more than that and expect the car to be down for at least a week.
