When i rev my 99 integra to 1.5k theres a high rattle sound. Sounds like the cat but im not sure. Its coming from underneath the car. what do you guys think? Also if it is the cat, what would be causing the rattling, and would this prevent me from passing smog?? Thanks alot.

 

Check your heat shields.

its not really a good idea to remove the heat shield. its really malleable anyway you should just be able to bend it. just put the car on stands or ramps and check it underneath there...

 

another option is to use pipe clamps on the heat shield to keep it from vibrating. I would have to agree that its not a great idea to remove the heat shield.

Thats your best bet.

And no a rattle wont make you fail smog.

 

I also have this same mysterious rattle but mine happens at 2.2k RPM. I have checked underneath the car but everything seems to be in place, hard to pin point the noise when you cannot simulate it while its raised up. So is the problem confirmed to be the cat shield? I don't know if removing that would be a great idea, its there to deflect the heat away and with that gone, the heat could cause some damage over time.

 

Any idea why it only happens at a certain RPM? If I go beyond 2.2k RPM, it goes away but if I straggle at 2.2k RPM by releasing the gas, it rattles and sounds like my car is about to fall apart. Its not a big issue but damn its so annoying!

you can put the car on jacks or stands and look what are you talking about? unless it rattles under load...

I have kind of the same problem, but it happens after about 2.5k and gets louder. Think it's a rod bearing... Hoping the exhaust is the problem though lol!

 

Mine doesn't get progressively louder, it just happens at that specific RPM...you scared me by mentioning rod bearing...I hope its just a loose heat shield or something.

Hey guy, I stated below that I did look and everything seemed normal but the rattle still exists at 2.2k RPM. Get back to me when you have something constructive and helpful to contribute.

Have you checked it out yet, Mike? BTW, which side of the tail light do you need? I found a driver side tail.

 

same thing just happend to me within the past couple of days and it was the heat shield on the cat just welded it and used pipe clamps to clamp it together no rattle anymore.
