Third Gear is Hissing!!
Out of nowhere today, I shifted into third gear and only heard a hissing sound. The tranny is going and my cat. isn't in the best shape, but this sounded insane!
All that would describe the noise is a weird hiss, and it's only while in third gear!
Any input on what this would be?

if it was fluid it would make a quick grinding noise while engaging the gear...the whining noise is more than likely your input shaft bearing taking a dump on you - time for a new trans
my input shaft bearing has been gone for a while (or so i thought) so right now it's most likely demolished.
thanks guys
looks like my suspension work is taking the backseat and my swap is going in earlier than i thought

Your "cat" is fighting off a "snake" and the snake is hissing in defense. I tell you its a jungle out there!!!

because the noises are inconsistent
and honestly know nothing about transmissions
but if you have any idea about what is going on, instead of flaming me, then i would appreciate it

i'd say it could be a problem with the shifting mechanism inside, when it slides the collar to lock the gear in place it might be too far, basically the problem i'd say lies between the outside parts of the syncros and the dog teeth geers that lock the 3rd gear in place... or with the shift fork..
and its just common sense that its not the cat or the input bearing if it only does it in one gear... since both those type issues would be consistent with engine speed...
