Re: grinding tranny (ekdj)
Id change the fluid and see if that helps. Id reccomend OEM Honda MTF or if you dont want to go with that IVe heard good things about GM Syncromesh

See if the shifter walks around when its in gear with your hand off of it, if it pops out of gear, ISB died, need a new one.
With the car on, push the clutch pedal all the way in, let it sit that way for 5-6 seconds, then let it out and take note of the change in pitch, or have a buddy put an ear near the bellhousing and listen for a scratching whirr type noise, if the noise is very distinct, you have a worn/failed bearing.
The second gear synchro is a double cone configuration, which has the best engagement ability of all the synchros in the transmission.
To isolate synchro failure, take the car on a drive, and shift the car into gear at various RPM points (IE goto 5000 in 1st, shift to 2nd, and take note of the feel. also do a downshift from 3rd to 2nd, and note the same thing. Then try to match the RPM's before you try to shift into that gear and see if the clash goes away, like if you shift at 4000 and you know the rpm's will drop to around 2800, keep it around 2800, and then shift into 2nd.)
If the clash is less noticable if you match rpm to that gear, most likely the synchro ring and cone is worn for 2nd, and may need to be replaced. How many miles are on that transmission, and how do you shift day to day?
10W30 oil will be fine, but I would stick to Honda MTF.

That is a possibility.
But also keep in mind if he has a worn clutch, that could also be it. A worn clutch wont fully disengage from the flywheel because the splines on the pressure plate are worn. Ive seen this happen with a friends single cam; when on jack stands, even with the clutch in (fully bled), the wheels would start moving in first gear.
The tranny was in fine shape, but it was only the clutch that had to be replaced. Once the clutch was replaced, the car drove normal.

yeah but he can downshift from 1st to second just fine...i had this happen with my y8 trans, i couldnt go from 1st to 2nd but i could downshift from any gear to 2nd. Im not too kind to transmissions....
