Default Remote for Viper Alarm 791vx

The LCD screen cracked on my remote for my Viper Alarm (791vx) the other day, so I ordered a new one and got it in.

After reading the instructions I programmed the remote and the Lock and Unlock worked perfectly.

I also have window modules that when I press the Aux. button the windows crack and then if I hold it the windows rolls all the way down. Then if I hold the Aux. button and the Lock button the windows roll back up. Again, working perfectly.

Then I tried to remote start it and it turns the car on and then immediately back off.

I've called a few places and asked a few people what I should do and no one has any idea.

Is there something that I can do to fix this? Because I actually have my other remote and the buttons still work, I can still remote start the car with it and it stays on like it should. Which makes me think there's something on the remote that's making it turn my car off.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

edit - Again, it only does not remote start with the new remote but still works with the old one!

Try relearning tach... Sounds like it's lost the tach threshold somehow... Especially since all of the other functions work...

^^ Start car with key, then, within 10 seconds, press & hold valet switch until LED lights solid. Release valet switch, turn car off.

Attempt to remote start.

I tried this and the LED light never came on I held it for over a minute and I tried it 4 times.

Yes only with the new remote. Should I get a new remote?

Do you have the thin purple wire going to a good tach signal?

I have no idea. I didn't hook it up it's been hoked up for a year now never had a problem till now. It would be really nice if both remotes would work so I could give the broken one to my girlfriend.

ok this is what you do, go online to directed electronics where viper is made from and print out the installation guide for your 791xv.....trust me i work at a circuit city installation bay and do alarms and remote starts on a day to day basis. After you find the installation guide go to the channels. as a matter of fact just do this......make sure you have the valet button and can see the led. turn your key to the on position and then back off. as soon as you do that press and hold the valet button. Its going to chirp once and keep holding the button. it will chirp twice and still dont let go of the button until it chirps three times. after that press the valet button two times and on the third time press and hold it. Now get your remote and press the unlock button but dont let go of the valet button. after you press the unlock button on the remote the alarm should chirp. after that you can let go of the valet button put the key back in the ignition cylinder turn to the on position and then back. Now the alarm should have chirped again but it will be like a confirmation chirp. now it should remote start no problem......hope this helps!!!

That worked brilliantly. What exactly did I do, aside from making it work.

YOU PROGRAMMED IT FOR VOLTAGE CHECK WHICH WHEN YOU DONT HAVE THE TACH WIRE HOOKED UP THIS IS THE OTHER ALTERNATIVE TO STARTING THE CAR. IT CHECKS FOR VOLTAGE GOING THROUGH IGNITION WIRE WHEN YOU TRY TO REMOTE START IT AND WHEN IT SEES IT THE CAR STARTS....

Ah okay, fine with me as long as it works. Now I am having a small problem though. Now when I remote start the car with that new remote I hear a relay clicking every 3-5 seconds. Although, when I remote start the car with the old remote it does not do that.

What's the deal, what's it doing? And why's all of a sudden is it doing this?

Another question, how would I put my car back to the setting it was before I changed anythings?

Are the parking lights flashing in time with the relay clicking?

you would do the same steps

3rd menu, menu item 2, is now the unlock setting.

to switch it back.. go back to the 3rd menu, 2nd item, and press the lock button.

Okay I just noticed something that I had not noticed before when I remote start my car with my old remote that parking lights stay solid and when I remote start my car with the new remote the the parking lights flash.

How do I change this?

Before I didn't notice that the new remote was making the lights flash that's what the relay is that's clicking, because I was starting it from inside my car and didn't notice.

Were not going to keep spoon feeding you every little thing. You need to look up the instructions (sticky at the top of the forum) and read them. It will tell you how to change that setting.

Okay look number one I don't know what this we **** is you haven't said anything till now.

And two I don't see anywhere in the manual where it distinguishes between which remote you're using. How one remote can cause the lights to flash and the other can cause the remote to be solid.

So if you're not going to help just don't say anything please.

I would assume that when you program a new remote it gives it all the default settings but it made the buttons work the same as the other one so I don't know how true that is.

This is not what I do for a living so this is all untreaded water for me.
