93 overheating?
first make sure that is full of coolant and check for leaks
second make sure the fans are coming on at normal temperature
if there is no leak and the fans are coming on just change the thermostat thats usually the problem, if after changing the thermostat the car still overheats my guess is that you have a blown head gasket you can do a block test just to make sure that is the head gasket.

alternator will not cause a overheating issue. however i am not saying you dont need one for other problems you may have. if you changed the t-stat and are still having a problem, you may have a bad head gasket, or a clogged radiator. or possibly both, your clogged rad may have caused a overheating issue wich caused a head gasket failure. without doing the propper tests you will only be guessing.

i don't know who you are getting your info from
how did you "checvk" the t-stat? or did you just replace it?
if it comes down to the head gasket i would advocate just doing a motor swap
