so i finished the swap and it works good now.. but i was wondering why the shop manual says to make sure to put the torque converter in the same spot as it was taken off? i didnt read this till i already put it on . only thing i can think of is so the bolt holes line up but maybe i got lucky the first time i put it on cuz they all lined up.

Always pre-fill. It insures proper fluid levels when you start up.
Always put it in the exact same spot, it insures proper harmonics, so things are not out of whack and create unnecessary vibrations.

I work for a dealership and transmissions get replaced all the time under warranty. I've never seen someone prefill a torque converter before.

Thats because they should already be done by whoever remanufactured the transmission and supplied the torque converter
It is a common practice for us to O-ring and fill the converter before shipping it out with a remanufactured transmission

</TD></TR></TABLE>No, because if it was full already it wouldn't take 9 quarts to fill the trans once it's in the car.

did you go through a lot of problems when you installed the trans. i am going through the same process right now and am wondering what the hardest part was. did you have to use an engine hoist to support the engine while putting in the tranny?
why did you dig up this ancient thread? fact is the 88-91 automatic is a steaming pile of ****. it is heavy doesn't shift at any of the right times is jerky as hell and is just plain ugly. with a dx 5 speed trans you will get better gas milage and your car will be faster. also there is info on this if you search more.
ok need help too, i empty the torque converter out and did not fill it up, just put everthing on. so i just need to fill the transmission will more ATF?? or i have to take every thing apart and fill the torque converter.
