Is this something that can even be done at home in the garage? Or must you have the special tire mounting machine?

Yes, you need the tire mounting machine. You also need the balancing machine to balance the tires.

So you can spend thousands of dollars for those machines, or you can go to Wal-Mart or your local tire shop or mechanic and pay them $10-20 per tire to do it.

yeah thats what I figured. I know it's not expensive to get someone else to do it, but I like to do absolutely everything myself.

you can do it with spoon bars, i used to knock truck tires and there is no machine for that, but low pro's, it is next to impossible w/o marring the wheel. it is possible, but not asthecitally.

Can you balance them after you mount them? If not, then you might as well just pay a shop. It's well worth paying for it to be done right.

its not hard if you know what you are doing and you are mounting something with some sidewall to it but if you have never changed tires with a machine i really doubt you are going to be able to acomplish it without one. i have done more than a few sets or tires with basic hand tools but i also worked in a tire shop for quite a few years so that helps. basically take your tires to a tire shop unless you truly know what you are doing.
