Default Crank Pulley came apart ... pics

So long story short, i was driving the prelude home saturday night, got into some boost in second gear and hear a horrible noise and a bunch of loud slapping. turns out the crank pulley came off.... in the most unusual fasion... it just sheared apart ... look at pics, and let me know if you have seen this happen before?

DAAAAMN!

well if there were already some chunks out of it, maybe another piece broke off, it got too unbalanced, and just spun itself apart? just a guess

Are you sure you didn't overtighten your alternator belt? If your using a mivro-v belt, they don't need to be tightened that much to grip.

yeah i was suprised to see how it came apart. my first thought was the bolt that holds the pulley some how came loose and the pulley came off ... but it was tq'd down, the inner part of the pulley that is. the outer part was just bouncing around...

I already got a new pulley on there, but thanks man

that happens with age. the rubber in the middle dries out and this is the result. i had it happen on my winter beater last year. its nice cuz it carries very few consiquences aside from damaged belts with are cheap.

Wow, that's such a clean break!

Just curious, which combination of pulleys are using? Like for my last swap, I re-used my H23 alternator, which only had 5 ribs. So I had to use a 5 ribbed belt on the H22 crank pulley (which had 6 ribs). And then after about 10k miles, the crank pulley came loose.

happens more often than you'd think..

Actually its quite common the the nsx.

Like stated, the rubber dries out and separates. It's not like the metal sheared off

I think it musta been the combination of hitting vtak and his mad boost kicking in!!! I have also seen this happen on DSM's, but they were always shredded inside, never a clean separation like that! Must be the ease of 530 WHP ripping things apart!

i have seen that many times, all on older accords and ludes, its just dried out rubber that finally powders and leave teh 2 pieces of metal to come apart.
