98 CR-V - Flashing CEL, P0301
Howdy, I have a '98 CR-V giving me a P0301 code (not accompanied by any other codes). CEL started flashing Friday night, but ran fine otherwise. Had the code pulled yesterday morning, drove over 100 mi and ran fine except for one time when coming to a stop, it chugged a bit, then after accelerating away, the CEL returns, but solid this time.
A little history:
Was having reoccuring P0420 codes for the past couple of months, very intermittent. Replaced cat and bank 1 O2 sensor (twice). After the cat the light stayed off for a couple of weeks, then this occured.
When I bought the 'V 5k miles ago, I heard about the head issue, so I checked the valves, which were all well within spec, but adjusted them all to the loose side of spec just to be safe - after all, "a slappy valve is a happy valve" :-)
Fast forward to Yesterday: in a panic, I checked the cyl #1 valve clearances (as well as the others) and all are right where I put them 5k miles ago. I assume this means I can rule out the head issue?
Are there any other common 'V issues related to this code? I'll go ahead and replace the plugs and wires anyway, but if there's anything else that these particular vehicles are prone to I'll start there... injectors maybe? Whatever it is seems to be somewhat intermittent...
I'll try switching injector #1 with #2 and see if the code moves with it. I also did this with the spark plugs, we'll see what happens.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks

This is common on 98-00 crv's. the valves recess into the head. When this happens honda's fix is a new head!

I've been out of state for a few days and haven't been able to respond and update...
I did go ahead and replace the plugs, wires, cap and rotor as they were orginal and in bad shape (the cap and rotor contacts were the worst). To this point the code has not returned...
However...
My wife was driving it a couple of days ago and while going about 40 mph everything but the stereo suddenly shut down... engine, gauges, turn signals, etc. She turned the car off then back on and everything went back to normal, and ran fine.
Since it all imediately went back to normal it doesn't sound like an alternator or battery, and the ground is good (figured it was anyway since the radio stayed on).
So, what could have come loose that would affect all (or most; some things weren't on, like the headlights) of the electrical system except for the stereo?
Also, I'm curious if this is in any way related to the P0301 code? I'm wondering if there might be an intermittent open that could affect the ignition and have been causing these missfires as well as this sudden shut-down? Whatever this most recent episode was, however, it did not trigger a code.
