Default Safe boost level on D16Y8

I have a 99 EX mileage is about 80 thousand. The car runs great does not burn oil. Compression is on the dot, and is taken care of like a member of the family. All internals are stock, what is a safe boost level for my motor. I am looking at a Greddy kit that someone is willing to give me an unbeatable price on, it is a brand new kit he never got around to installing. I myself think 5 psi is a safe level but hear people going up to 8 on stock internals. This wont be a track car but more highway/around town car with the ability to shut up some one with a bunch of stickers on there car (cuz we know each sticker adds 10 hp). Any thoughts?

its all depends on the turbo.. on my stock z6 with the turbonetics kit i run all day on 9psi at about 220 to the wheels im guessing. should be safe with a good tune on no more than 9psi. its all about the tune

It has nothing to do with the boost that you run, it is about the power that you are making.

You can run higher boost on a smaller turbo and make the same power as a bigger turbo with less boost.

Take your time, get a nice setup and make sure that it gets tuned. The tuning is what will ensure your car stays healthy.

Think what koa meant to say was "depends on teh turbo...and that's all there is to it"

Your engine doesn't give 2 ***** how much "boost" is being fed through it, it's only whether the internals can take the power (energy) transferred through them (horsepower). I think it's a very safe threshold to say that on a good tune, a Z6 or Y8 could handle about 200-220 at the wheels. Some pple push it well over 220, but I don't think that's a safe deal on a DD, especially if you like to get on the gas a few times. Then that's assuming you have a "safe" tune (slightly rich, so the chance of you tossing a rod is decreased) and/or a good tune. A hack and missing link setup out on your driveway may not be the best idea.

Though let me get this straight:
You want to install this kit just so you can shut up people with stickers on their car?

Like a stock D series turbo build actually means your car is fast or something because you can beat some fool's toyota camry?

Whatever, the engine internals can probably handle 200-220hp at the wheels on a good tune, different turbos will yield different power, bigger turbos = more spool time, more power, and more turbo lag, smaller turbos = less turbo lag, less spool time, and less power, 15lbs on a smaller turbo could mean 5lbs on a larger one, don't go by that.

Most boost tuners will tell you that 5-7lbs is safe on stock internals, but ive seen someone run 10lbs on stock internals without a problem for about a year before the car was sold.

Tip to world:

If a tuner tells you the mamximum output your internals can bear is based on a PSI rating, DON'T GET YOUR CAR TUNED THERE!

Well it my instance its a TD04H-19T the only thing im lacking right now to even start a build is the damn intercooler... trying to stay Greddy through and through, its a proven name, obviously. I would love a turbonetics setup but right now it all comes down to a price issue.

Greddy is alright, if all you need is an intercooler get one off of ebay. For what youre going to use it for you dont need anything better than one of those 100 dollar intercoolers.

Well even though Im getting everything else at a good price I dont want to have all the good stuff and a cheap link in the middle of everything. When the money does come around I plan on then starting to build the motor.
