Default HALO effect on AD welding helmets?????

I just got back from linclon welding school. And they said every AD helmet will eventually suffer from the HALO effect except for speedglas. HALO effect meaning the outside "ring" of the filter/lense wont get dark anymore and it grows over time? WHile stricking an arc if you look at the outside edge of you lense it wont be dark? Has anyone else heard of that?

I haven't run into that but I have a SpeedGlas. Usually on all of the other auto-darkening helmets I've owned they break pretty quickly, probably before the lense had a chance to wear out.

I had a speedglas for 7 years without issue.
It broke when it fell 10 stories...
Then I bought The optrel satellite, love it.
The extended range of shades and grinding feature
is great for the money.
I have 2 now, the oldest is 5 years old, and this halo effect is just starting.
I use it for mostly MIG under cars for tacking etc now.
The halo effect isn't much yet, but it is a td brighter if you are looking throught he very edges. I would guess it's about 1 shade.
Not sure about the other brands, but after 5 years, most need replacing anyway. Not a real issue.

my uncle used the jackson eqc for 10 years without problem, the day the nexgen came out- he went and got that and has used it since. ive had the standard eqc and havent had any halo'ing problems like youre talking about. i dont see any reason specifically why speedglas would be immune to the problem tho other than a small lens.

I've had a speedglass for about 4 years now, still good as new, just change out the clear lenses every once in a while. I've never used another band that long, but i've never seen the halo deal. Probably not a huge thing to worry about, but buy a Speedglass just to be safe. lol

no problem here! should be able to strike an arc blind.....probably better when starting to learn so you dont have to wait for a ad hemet when starting a new project at a freinds house or something

I've never heard of that. I have a miller ad that is like 3-4 yrs old with no probs and I used a company speedglass for about a year with no issues. I mostly just use a basic non ad helmet now. We stock the lenses at work so I dont have to buy them I dont even remember what brand it is lol.

I couldnt bring my self to spend over a 100$ on a good AD hood, i bought a $30 Jackson after using a friends, i only use my AD for tack welding and mig welding now. The Fixed lensed hoods are just so much better then any AD i've used. I can spark an arc blind with no problems now.
