Default Overheating.. sometimes?

My cars been sitting for about a week before i drove it today. While i was idling in my gfs driveway i noticed the temp gauge creeping up and then going back down, then creeping up. While driving a bit more, it went all the way up to the middle line, then back down. It would stay at normal if i had the heat on. Its about 25-30° out so i don't know how i could be overheating while driving. When i got home i popped the hood and felt the top rad hose and it was extremely hard and hot. I usually can squish it about half way. Lower rad hose is harder than normal as well. So that ruled out the thermostat i'd believe. Besides its less than a year old. The fan kicked on as soon as i turned off the car for about 2 seconds and then turned off, and then back on until i went inside. So i think the fans are ok.

I checked the resivor tank and its till at the "full" line so i don't think its leaking..

History on the car

2 summers ago-new raditor, topped off coolant
3 months ago (1500 miles) had the timing belt and water pump changed at a shop. Car came back with a whirrling noise, tight belt. My car sounds like its supercharged now. But i was reading haynes and it says a broken waterpump can whirrl. Also, it says something could be in the block blocking something.

I plan on going out tomorrow and checking for air in the system, but is there anything else it could be? Or could the water pump broke or somehing

can the fins on the pump itself actually come off and become lodged in somewhere blocking coolant? and how likely is it if its a new unit. Im not sure if they used a reman. or OEM or what. Im gunna see if i hear the whirrling too tomorrow. if not i'd assume that was the water pump and its dead now.

the whirrling noise is one or more belts are over tightend possiably the balancer or t/belt. as far as the ovr heating issue does the fan's cycle while it runs ?

ok at what temp does the fans cycle ? half or 1/4 and how long do they stay on ?
asfar as the belt noise i would take it back and let them know because it will cause damage if not corrected.

Bad advice,, the pump is only 3 months old ..and the chances of the fins being broken are slim to none

Sony you said the top hose gets hot,, does the bottom hose gets hot as well ?? if lower hose is cool or just warm the t-stat is sticking closed ,, radiator full ?? cap ok ? both fans come on ?

chk this link out ,,

yeah i drove around today, and same thing again, it slowly rises up but not higher than half way. The heat is searingly hot, and the top hose is hard and hot, and lower one isn't as hot. How likely is it the tstat when bad from less than a year?

I read through that link honda-master and i know both my fans work, and they don't drain the battery from staying on too long after the cars on. The waterpump is new, as is the rad cap. The coolant level im not sure about, but the resivor tank is full. I will check the radiator itself now since its cool. Other than those.. sounds like a stuck sticking tstat? What about air in the system?

was the t/stat you installed OE or from vatozone ? nothing beats oe for quality and performace. im leaning towards the t/stat.

No it was actually from Napa i believe. It might just have been bad or something, im not sure.

But its gotta be it. coolant is fine, upper radaitor hose is too hot to touch and very very hard. Cars warming up in about 2 mins, when it used to take like 5 or more. Lower rad hose is cool to the touch.

I had this exact problem, except mine would go halfway, go back down, and finally went halfway then all the way hot...

my t-stat was from napa and my mechanic said it was a CHEAP-*** part...go to carquest or some other place and buy the highest-quality t-stat you can find...solved my problem and haven't had another heating deal since (this was back in may)

my napa stat lasted about a week and seized up...get a quality stat
