Wiring help
Hey guys....I have a quick wiring question.
Right now i have my radar detector powered through my lighter port. I want the lighter port free so i can hook up my GPS into it. I know they make adapters to allow two things to be plugged into one port but i was thinking of doing a more sleek approach. Is there a way to cut the power cable going to the radar detector and wire it directly to the battery or use the power cable going to my CD player to power it? I wanted to have the wire running under the dash so it will be out of sight.

as long as you find the hot wire, the bigger prob i think is running the wire from the top of the dash to the inside of the dash where your radios located. get the wire hanger trick ready. you would have cut the plug off to splice into hot wire and find a good ground. but will work.
Any idea how to find out which one is the positive cable and which one is the ground on the charger wire. Since the lighter has two wires going to it.....im guessing one of them is ground. So if i figure out which one is ground on the carger wire i can hook it up to it right?......or is it better to just attach it to the frame of the car? Also there is a fuse inside the charger plug.....I don't need this do I?
do you have after market radio? normally black is ground unless in a house, as far wire i believe its red or yellow, but make sure its only getting power after you have the keys in the ignition, please do yourself a favor and get amultimeter their 20 bucks and diagnosis's alot of things, no you do not need the fuse. if you have stock radio test each wire until you find one that powers on after keys in ignition and turned to on postion.
ahhh...sweet....I can use the power going to the radio to power the radar detector! I guess i can use the ground from the radio as well. Didn't think of that one! Thanks!
yah i told you hot wire earlier, hot wire would be on constintly, but i was wrong on that part i ment a wire that powers only when you put the igntion key in the on position, im not sure which wire it is on stock though. but it really doesnt matter as long as the wire gets power when the key is in igntion postion and your radios not turned on.

i have an extra car charger for my cell phone. So the plan is to cut that wire and use it as an extension. I want to place the radar detector above my rear view mirror so it is somewhat discreet. I have to run the wire from the radio, up the side of my windshield and back to the middle to the rear view mirror. haha thats a good 10 feet of wire. Do you think the same gauge electrical wire will do the trick to use as an extension?
I installed my car cd player so i know which wire your talking about.

sounds like an excellent idea, i thought you were doin it lower, but that will work, geez man makin me want to do it to mine to haha i bought the ac extension to the 4 way switch that runs my neons and bs under my passenger seat. as far as the guage same gauge will work man, i like to solder and shrink wrap the connections hate the solderin part though.

you're doing it how i did my valentine 1. I put it right under the rear view mirror, ran the wire on the right side of the mirror, looped it to the left and ran it across the drivers side top and down the pillar, into the radio. I believe i used the accessory turn on. Mine will turn on and off with the car, and keep on if i turn off the radio. Make sure to use good connections and to hide the wires
i ran a bigger gauge wire for grounding the radio, i didn't use the stock wire, so i connected it to that. you should be able to use the radio ground though. If you get ground noise then try a different one.
