Synthetic Oil
Regardless of how many miles synthetics claim you can put on one oil change, your oil filter is dirty after 3000 regardless of your oil choice. Instead of spending $30 for a case of Mobil 1 synthetic, spend $12 on some cheap oil and buy a nice filter. Don't be lazy, just change it every 3k and forget synthetic. But to answer your original question, there isn't a set age or mileage at which synthetic becomes an advantage (especially since I don't see it as an advantage at all).
i disagree with your statement of synthetic having no advantages over conventional oil....but to each their own

On higher millage motors synthetic tends to leak easier that regular oil. On my DA with 200k I tried royal purple one oil change and I burned a quart in a month when with normal average priced 10w40 wouldn't burn that much every oil change about 4 months. So there are some difference and there isn't a set millage. If you are burning any oil and switch to synthetic expect there to be even more oil burning. So synthetic is pretty much a waste on higher millage motors that tend to burn oil.
