Default distributor rattles...

I just bought a 93 integra, the distributor rattles at 30plus mph, i notice that its not an oem one also.... opened it and tighten all bolts, rotor... all looks new... but same problem... what should i do? find an oem replacement? is it a wire problem? or can i fix it?

add: doesn't rattle at neutral when reving

Are you sure the noise is comming from the dizzy. Usually the noise would arise with rpm, if its comming from the dizzy. The dizzy doesn't receive differant loads from vehicle speed vs rpm.

You may want to reinspect the sound and verify where else it might be comming from. Also what kind of noise are you hearing. May beable to guide you in the right direction.

Everyone is asking if its your dizzy, of course you should use a stethoscope to be sure but I am suprised no one yet told you that YES, this could happen, half way down the shaft inside the dizzy is a bearing, it goes bad, and you hear the rotor hitting the **** inside the dizzy that go to each spark plug wire.

Go to the dealer (ask for a discount) and buy a dizzy sub assy and transfer over your coil and ignitor, if you have that type. Buy a new cap and rotor from your discount store. Let me back up a second, if its hitting the **** inside then just pull the cap and look at them, if you have cut marks on the ****, or metal colored dust or rust looking dust all on the inside of you cap, then its a bad bearing and follow instructions above, seen it many times, takes real skill to change this bearing and inner oil seal, not really worth the trouble for some.

Did we ask if you were sure if the noise was from the dizzy.

no they are not the same, and yes your bearing could be shot in it as he said above and it would shake around... but we dont want you to replace something that isnt for sure the rattle you know.

Check the t-belt if thats loose that would cause the rotor to move around in the distro.....good luck!!

The distributor will make some ticking noise which is normal as the electrical current passes thru the contacts.

If the Bearing in the Dizzy is bad then you will see oil coming out of your dizzy cap on the bottom. And if it's really bad then your car won't start because the dizzy contacts are very close if it has too much play then it will come in contact with the sensors and that will kill the dizzy entirely.

unless you use OEM replacement parts for the cap and rotor there clearances will be slightly different and the more clearance it has the louder the ticking.

Hope this helps

There is truth in what you are saying but if the rotor is hitting the contacts for the spark plug wires, the car will still run, there just wont be any air gap between the rotor and the contacts, better for the spark strength (ever so slightly), bad for cap and rotor and entire dizzy.

The Dizzy bearing is a sealing unit.

If you grease it then you will mess it up.
