What is the easiest way to remove this shift linkage pin (pic inside)
This is the pin the that hold the shift linkage to the tranny ... I want to put in my new sway bar and need to drop this piece to slide it in. I tried punching it out but it didn't work.
How hard should I hit it and should the punch fit in the hole or sit right on the surface of the pin?

Hah!
I was so fed up about not being able to take out that pesky retainer pin...I went ahead to remove the engine w/ the shift linkage still attached!
Of course, I didnt have the proper tools at the time.

I replaced my anti-roll bar recently and did not have to disconnect this pin. I disconnected the bar at the other end.

if you have air tools you can use a air chisle with a puch attachment and out it comes real quick. i had a hard time with mine, but i stuck with it and one good hard hit and it moved. from there it was no problem.
Get a punch that's the same size as the pin and beat the pin with a hammer.
It will come out.

Use a pair of vice grips to hold the punch so you don't hit your hand. I smashed my fist more than once hammering that stupid pin out of my friends car. He used a pair of vicegrips to hold the punch when it was his turn to work on pounding it out. It's not easy but it will come out.
To get the pin out, you can also use 1 of the 4 AC bolts... the bolt is about 3" longs and the tip of it is the perfect size of the pin and it has no threads on it...
I had the same problems to when I was replacing my shift linkage. Went out the next morning and got meself a pin punch. Just keep tapping away with the punch and hammer, and it'll slowly but surely come out. Cheers!
I use a 4mm socket and 1.5" extension, and hammer the end of the extension. It's cake, fo shizzle.
