there is no synchro for reverse. that is why it grinds. the gears for reverse are straight cut.

the first - reverse trick aligns the shift collar and first gear which causes the mainshaft to rotate a small amount, which then causes the reverse gear to have a better chance at lining up and going in, since it is straight cut.

Another way to get reverse to go into gear is to gently let out the clutch while attempting to shift into reverse. this will cause the mainshaft to spin a small amount and allow the straight cut gears to line up better. either way works, and its best not to worry about it. the gears are really strong and can handle a little grind now and then..

shift into first cause it's the closest to the reverse and then shift to Reverse.
