question-Battery light?
if the car is still running ok i don't think it would be your battery it may be that its not wanting to recharge, aka bring jumper cables everywhere you go
the cheap way to find out take another car battery out of your parents car plug it in. if the light goes off then its your battery go out and buy a new one. if the light does not go off then i would look deeper into it. do you do your own work?

the alternator is done. lets get something straight here folks.
if youre driving along and your battery light comes on, it does not mean you have a faulty or low charged battery. why? because when your engine is running, your battery isnt being used, the alternator is. The battery light is an indication of a charging system failure. Check your belt, check the tension, check the alternator connections. Have autozone or whatever do a charging system test. they will then tell you that your alternator is outputting less than 12v and it will need to be replaced.
