orange peel question, pro painters please help
Ok I am getting my car completely resprayed with new HOK paint and clear. I told the painter and owner that I wanted the finish to look like glass. Both of them tell me the in order to get that look, the whole car needs to be wet sanded and polished and if I want it to look like that then I need to pay extra...they say that all paint jobs have some degree of orange peel. They are not baking my car and I know this helps in the curing process and over all finish. Is the true about the orange peel and should I need to pay extra to not have orange peel in my paint???
What they tell you is true. Even cars from the factory have a degree of orange peel.
If you can live with the orange peel (assuming it's not VERY BAD...I've got a pic I will post tomorrow as an example) then just give it a good compound and polish after the paint is cured.
Wetsanding will require you to stay ontop of your car care regime to ensure the paint is protected at all times given that you've taken some clearcoat off by wetsanding.

Yes, there is always going to a degree of peel when referring to completes. Its up to you and the shop to decide whats included in the paint job. If you want a perfect show quality finish you have to pay the amount agreed to, by both you and the shop.
ok thats what I needed to hear, I will not accept any orange peel greater than what would be factory. If I want it to look like glass then I will have to pay. I will not know anything until its done but I was just wondering if it sounded "legit"

you know what i mean
lol I mean i think for the most part the hondas from the factory have pretty good paint jobs so in that respect, I at least want it to be that good but hopefully better...

if you want the texture to be as flat as possible. use the best clear coat. you will have less amber in the clear and if reduced enough the paint will flow and laydown flat.
cut and buff is the only alternative.

Its more about the painters skill imo. Clear build over 2 mils on side panels will have peel, maybe minimal maybe not. The only way to have a completely flat profile is cut/buff as far as completes. If its applied well and flows out nice, it should be minimal.
well it is a full dip, everything but the engine bay is getting done in house of kolor Majik Blue Pearl. The car needed extensive body work. the total bill is around 6500 for materials, labor, and painting
hmmm, to many variables there. I'm just curious how much your expecting, and what is included in the $6500. If your not satisfied when you pick it up, bitch about it, thats what every other customer does.
well this is 2007 factory honda paint... mad orange peel. hope you dont get your car back looking like this.. (ignore the red circle... hehe thats my handy work)

now from working at a junk yard i saw a lot of rebuilders go through the doors... and local painters here are able to lay down base and clear A LOT smoother than what Honda did in the above picture.
i even asked the painter once what grit he wet sanded with... he looked at me and laughed because it wasnt even buffed... It is very possible to get glass like finish without any wet sanding

It's definately possible, but it does take some technique and know how.

I would like to know how some painters can get little to no orange peel as well. I know its technique and what not, but what do they do different? My painter is bad *** at laying paint down super smooth. I can look all day long and find practically no trace of orange peel.
forgot to make my final point...
any good painter can lay **** down smooooth.. i bet he is just covering his *** because he thought you would bitch and complain when you saw a tiny bit of peel and he doesnt want to deal with it down the road...

lol, all painters have good and bad days, we are human after all,lol but there is deff. a nack to laying done clear to get a smooth finish, most times there is no other way than to: <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by jasoncrashtech »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">if you want the texture to be as flat as possible. use the best clear coat. you will have less amber in the clear and if reduced enough the paint will flow and laydown flat.

but remember you get what you pay for
oh and i'm talking about the cut and buff part not reducing the clear nor using only high end stuff.

hey ive been painting for a couple of years now, and will start by saying i dont know everything not even close to how much u can learn in this field but two things to say one just about every paint job has what is called trash in it, Thats dirt, and something times hair from the painter so all that trash needs to be sanded flat with a DA sander with 1200 or 1500 and run back over with 3000 (doesnt have to be run back over with 3000grit but makes buffing easier) or wet sanded with 1500 but their will be trash in your paint job and this shop if like any good shop will return this can with little to no trash in it. with no increase in the price they told u. when they told u that price that will include them sanding that trash out of the paint job) (if they r a good shop) second if the car is black u r going to see so much more peel and everything else that is harder to see as say a white or silver color car, but what im getting at is if u see trash in your paint job tell them, get that **** out dawg or its on like donkey kong!
