Default Help me get my speedometer working. Have searched. xxREVISEDxx

My speedo has not worked since I bought my car earlier this summer. 98 GSR. I just got a new VSS, my old one was missing the square pin. So I got that in and still nothing. I checked the fuses, all good, checked the three wires on the VSS harness, got Ground, 12v and 9v on the three. I have cleaned the connections on the plug and everything. What else could it be? I reset the check engine code, which was the VSS code. I just want a working speedometer, please help.

Have you actually replaced the gauge cluster, or at least tried a working one to make sure it wasn't just your cluster? I had this sort of problem before and once it was the cluster, and once it was actually an issue inside of the transmission. Hopefully it is the former and not the latter.

I have not tried the cluster. That is the last thing I want to try. Is there a way to test that out at all without buying a new cluster? The guy I bought it from said it worked but he lost the square pin in the VSS, so I got a new one and it still doesn't work.

Seems fishy...maybe he was telling you that so that you would think it was just the square pin, and not something in the tranny. I do not know of a way to test that other than borrowing someone's cluster and trying it out.

I could see him doing that. He seemed fishy himself. I can see the gear in the tranny that spins the VSS gear, but I guess I would have to put the car in the air and spin the tires to see if that gear is actually moving. I don't know if this would work, but I put my drill on the plug side of the VSS and turn the car on and spun that shaft and my speedometer didn't move then either.

Boy that sounds like the cluster...If you lived closer I'd let you try one of mine first. If you end up needing one...I have a speedometer I would sell for 25 shipped.

Is that for the whole cluster or just the speedometer part?

Thats just for the speedo part...the whole cluster would be $50 shipped for a gsr. I just happened to also have a parts cluster out of a gsr as well that had the plastic broke for the surround. Thanks!!!

Yeah let me know, if it works I will take it. I guess I am going to have to do the process of elimination on this one.

I was going to suggest trying a new cluster. If you replaced the square pin in the VSS, it has to be the cluster or the tranny. Let us know if the new cluster fixes your problem.

Okay, so I got the new cluster in....still nothing. So, I tried taking the sqaure pin out of the new VSS and putting in my old VSS to make sure it wasn't something in the VSS....still nothing. I am still getting a check in light code 17, which is the VSS? Any ideas?

i had the same problem when i pulled my tranny out. all it was is the pins on the harness was not well seated on the vss. all i did is used a small screw driver n bent the pins on the harness so it would have a better fit.

I finally got my speedo working. Ended up being the plug on the VSS. The clips on the wires had been opened up so they weren't making contact with the connectors on the VSS. YEAH!!!
