Default Countershaft bearing snap ring.

got trans apart replaced mainshaft bearings and now I cant get the countershaft to fall into place.
the only thing I can think of that could be causing this is a metal ring on the mainshaft that has a L shaped tab on it under the upper main bearing.
I have tried 3 times and still cant get the snapring to fall into place.
if there are any tips to getting this right let me know, thankyou.
