Default What is stronger

ok ive been wondering this a bit.

we are dealing with stainless here 316 rod:

1. is it stronger to tig weld it or put a big *** SS stick weld on the piece?

2. tig weld root + SS stick cap pass?

3. Tig root and cap pass?

i mean im prettty sure its number 3, but ive never really bothered to test out a stick SS weld.

A well made stick weld could have about the same strength as teh TIG weld, but the TIG weld will be tougher. Meaning it will absorb more engergy before breaking. meaning it won't be as brittle and will bend a little before breaking.

If that's not clear, then the answer to all questions of strength is: Chuck Norris is ALWAYS stronger. :D

well I figured that much out on my own. Whats the application or is this just a general question?

I haven't done much SS stick but man it welds like butter, hands down the easiest stick welding I've done. No Idea on the strength detail though, What size and thickness pipe are we talking about here?

your best bet is to just go get the strength specs for the eletrodes you would be using vs the filler you would be using.

I've probably only welded like 4 ft of stainless stick but I've layed what feels like miles of fluxcore and dual shield.

dual shield stainless is Fing sweet btw.

I thought tool steel was super smooth. I think it was A1 or something like that. Dunno it's been at least a year since I've done that.
