Default welding SS??

what is the difference in welding SS and just steel? what kind of tip would be used. for my DP thanx

You probably want to use 2% thoriated tungston (1/16) for your electrode.

Also you'll need the right filler rod, for 304, you can use something close like 308

stainless won't conduct the heat as well and will expand faster so you won't need to put as much heat into the piece but if you're not carefull it'll get all twisted up on ya.

Stainless also crystalizes. You need to backpurge if the weld is structural. If not, it's gonna be ugly on the back side of the weld.

It's not just for being a clean weld to promote flow, but it will be a much stronger weld. Chances are with the majority of the butt weld tubing cracks you see on this board were due to the fact that the welder was trying to save a little time and money and didn't purge. When tig welding you should back purge with Ar for either mild or stainless as far as I'm concerned.

Yes a mig can be used. You just need the right gas and wire.
