I've had this issue a few times in 2 different civics and i'm just wondering if anyone knows any good fixes for it.

This morning I'm driving along 80mph and then all of the sudden the speedo just shuts off and falls to 0. About 10 minutes later it wakes up and bounces from 0 to 10 to 5 to 40 to 15 to 65 to 30 then stayed steady at 80 till I got off the freeway. I've also had it at other times just bounce up and down like that for a few minutes and then goes away.

Anyone have any ideas?

Vehicle speed sensor or speedo

 

Check the VSS connector. 9/10 cases that I see the pins rust away inside the connector, causing the blip of the speedo.

 

had the same issue...changed the plug on the harness

 

mine did that when my altanator ground wasn't all the way grounded and caused my car to run off battery thus causing the spedo and tach to jump all around and die and come back.

The alternator grounds off the block, so I'm assuming your alternator was not properly affixed to the engine. The only feasible way that could happen is if your alternator died, and you killed the battery while driving...

mine was also the VSS connector, figured it out after i started using Honda-tech

 

Thanks for the replies. I'll check the VSS tomorrow on my day off. That's the one that plugs into the transmission, right?

 

yes the vss is normally a 3 wire plug towards the rear off the tran's.

most the time coolant or some fluid gets in there and cause's the pins in the vss to corrode, when you install your new one fill the plug with dieletric grease

 

So should I get a new sensor, or a new plug, or both?

 

well the sensor probablu, check inside the plug and the sensor to see if its all green or corroded looking

 

Ok, how much are those sensors and is the best place to get one the dealer?

 

you can get one used on here for around 40 or 50 bucks, brand new over 100 bucks, i actually just replcaed mine and my cost was 60 or 70 dealer.
