Default rainy days in cali

As winter approches california, Im a little worried about driving around with my cai. How often have you heard of someone actually hydrolocking? Should I get some sort of hydroshield? Do those even really help? By the looks of where its placed, its would be kinda hard to hydro lock since there is a little plastic covering directly down where my filter sits. Anyways I guess Im just looking for some tips to keep my whip from getting screwed. thanks!

I have a full CAI as well, and I will admit, when I was driving last Friday the rain fell so heavy I could barely see out the windshield (yes the wipers were on full). I was getting a little concerned. My biggest fear was the puddles that were forming very quickly. Cars were throwing water walls all over the place.

Anyway, the rain was pretty bad. I was very careful to stay away from the puddles, and stayed in the middle lanes on the freeway. After 30 minutes of driving in the down pour, I noticed my car started running a little rich at lower RPM. When I got home I pulled the under carriage plastic off and found that the filter had gotten a little damp from all the water splashing on the road. There was no water in the pipe, just a damp filter element. I dried it out quickly with my heat gun, and everything was fine.

I think as long as you stay away from the puddles you will be ok, but I will admit, I am thinking about switching to a SRI. On the other hand, how often do we get rain like that? Not often where I live. In fact, this is the first time it has rained like that in 3 years.

Yeah definatley. Im swaping my AEM for an Injen CAI next week. Maybe Ill look into getting that hydroshield sock. It doesnt rain a whole lot here but when it does some streets get super super flooded, Trucks even have problems. People have told me that for your engine to get screwed up you need to get alot of water in there, pretty much completley submerged. I guess if it was REALLY a concern alot of people in the eastern states wouldnt have a CAI.

Sure if you want to choke your power.

Unless the filter is completely submerged under water you should have nothing to fear. Did you know you can hydrolock your vehicle with the stock induction system? Even if you did do this your comprehensive insurance coverage will catch your back!!

Get a pre-filter by K&N or Outerwears and dont submerge your filter you will be fine... I advise everyone with a K&N style filter to get a pre-filter so you no longer have to risk damageing your filter when taking out the bugs, twigs, leafs and rocks out of the pleats... They also repel water...

avoid puddles....anything else your are fine. get a hydroshield or that AEM one (forgot the name) just to make you feel better, IMO waste of money

i have a CAI on my other car that is not protected/encased by anything (such as a bumper), no problems, i just dont drive through puddles.

Aem makes a bypass for their CAI that would actually prevent the water getting sucked into your intake..go to http://www.AEMPower.com

I would get some sort of prefilter. My buddy hydrolocked his motor. Sometimes when its raining hard, you cant see the puddles.
