Default Belt slipping?

I just got a 1997 SH and when I shift from first to second or second to third under 3000 rpms it seems to take a second to grab like the belts are slipping. Any suggestions.

What belts are you talking about? You think your alternator or your power steering or your AC has a delay when you shift?

I dont know, maybe it is my clutch. It is a manual transmission, but id I am driving conservatively and I shift from just say first to second, once I am in second gear the car is kind of sluggish until about 3,000 rpms and you can feel the car kind of kick in. I didnt know if it is the clutch wearing out or some kind of belt or something slipping in the engine. Thanks.

ok well if you feel the car rev up but not accelerate then your clutch is slipping. the only belts that could be slipping on your motor would be the ones driving the ac compressor and the alternator so they wouldn't effect the feel of the car. is the car just kinda bogging down and not really accelerating well under 3000rpm? or is it reving up but not really grabbing?

its the clutch. put it in 5th at 20-mph and see if it revs while under load.

Ok so if it is my clutch I am going to go ahead and get the Exedy stage 1 and fidanza fly wheel done at my shop that will cost about $350. Now, my transmission grinds a little going in to 5th gear, right now I doble clutch and it does not grind. Should I go ahead and have them rebuild or take a look at the transmission since they will be down there taking apart everything anyway?

grind on 5th gear upshift is a very common problem with the fifth gen preludes. the entire trans dosent need to be rebuilt, it just on little piece that you can replace. i forget what exactly its called but i remember it only costs like 80 bucks to fix. i have it sometimes too but i just ignore it, it still works so i'm not gonna bother pulling out the trans to fix it.

97s have a defective shift fork that causes a lot of them (including mine) to grind into 5th.

Well that would be cool to be able to get it fixed just because. But it is not my clutch, I put it in to 5th gear and drive from 20 mph up to 40 and it never slipped. I can dump the clutch and it wont slip at all....

well you do have a stock prelude. When I had this problem it was my distrubitor, cap, rotor, wires and plugs. Changed those all out and problem went away.

When was the last time you a maintenace was done on the car ignition parts?

Stock, the preludes don't have that much power below 3K but if you have warn out ignition parts you'll feel it even more.

Continuous variable transmission

or something to that effect, it's a type of automatic transmission that has an infinite number of gears so that you don't feel the shifts, problem is if you are putting down any type of noticeable power over stock they don't tend to like that. I know they were used in the saturn ION's first gen coupes if you got auto tranny you got a CVT, the sedans used a stronger 5spd auto from misin I believe.

Preludes don't have CVT's they were just joking around.

Yeah, continuously variable transmission.

It's a transmission with no gears, only 2 pulleys; one of which can vary the size of the section that the belt rides on effectively changing the gearing infinately...well almost.

Yea I have a stock SH...and I am not sure when those were serviced last, ive only had the car for 5 days. One of the first things i normally do is replace spark plugs and spark plug wires to the really good wires immediately. Come to think of it, my old Accord had the same problem and it was just the spark plugs and wires....I will replace those today and see if that works..thanks!

Well I replaced the spark plugs with the NGK platinum, and I added some Restore to my oil, but it is still doing it. I sprayed some water on the wires at night with the engine running but didnt say any sparks. So, I will buy some new wires from my friend who works at Napa on Monday so I can get them cheap and see if that helps. Any other ideas of what it might be?

dont spray water on your spark plug wires! it will cuse moisture to get traped under the boot an cause corrosion. to test for spark you just have to stick it near a ground with a screwdriver in the end
