Default Dumptube bracing ideas - keeps cracking

First time around this think cracked at the Vband flange. I added the two braces. 200 miles later the braces cracked at the weld. Any other ingenuitive ideas out there on how to support this thing?

make it from some thick pipe and forget about that "brace"

............none should be needed for that........ the thermal expansion of the metal will just keep cracking them

if its made right and with the right materials you dont need any

Thermal expansion was the reason I didn't use the braces to begin with, then it cracked at the top of the V-band flange. I admit, that is a rather long moment arm for that much mass (Tial 44). How thick of a tight mandrel bend like that can be easily found in 1.75"?

if you welded tabs on each flange and then bolted a brace in between it may help the problem, or possibly two bungs and a rod in between with spherical rod ends

just some ideas

you could use a 1.5" schedule 10 or 40 pipe elbow. i'd take out those two rods and make a proper gusset to run between the two flanges that follows the radius of the bend and weld it all along the pipe on both side of the gusset.

a full gusset would work as well. .. 1/8" flat sheet cut in a half moon welded all the way would probably follow this same premise

Found a .145" wall SS bend at McMaster part# 45555K515.

THis will reduce a lot of stress because it is shorter in addition to being over twice the thickness of the existing pipe.

Pipe is 304 stainless. Both flanges are stainless, but not sure on the grade.

Yeah I'd be concerned about that it definitely makes a difference.

You back purge too?

I normally only backpurge with butt welds. I probably only got 90-95% penetration on that pipe. Probably not the strongest method, but it's not easy welding 7/16" plate to .065" pipe.

Will braces or brackets make a dumptube crack faster since it will prohibit thermal expansion?

well it depends, on longer parts you may experience that, on shorter pieces its not such of an issue, and being like metals it should expand slightly but at the same rate throughout (if its longer the areas getting more heat closer to the turbo will expand more and areas further away will expand less)

Here is the schedule 40 pipe. The flange did warp a bit, but it should still seal. Does this thing need to be stress relieved?
