Default type R vs. STI

So earlier this week had a chance to drive an STI which I've been wanting to check out for a while. Thought I would be more impressed than I actually was

1. One thing that I was impressed with were the brakes.....it stops on a dime.

2. Inside.....was not impressed with the aesthetics......too much plastic up front

3. Although part of this may be I don't know the car inside & out like I do my R but on a circular off-ramp seemed to be more body-roll than the R.....felt a bit unstable and had to slow down....I was probably doing 45 or so. In the R I could have taken that corner faster + felt a bit more in control.

4. Suppose I should have known this but thought it would be a bit faster off the line.....with only 75 more horsepower though I guess this is to be expected.

Although for some it's sacrileges and even I have gone back and forth after driving a car w/ a turbo for the first time has got me a little more excited about putting one on mine to get somewhere in the 350-400 HP range.

anyone else with comparison stories?

Or a 1st Gen DSM, and match the EVO's performance (Straight line, at least) for $1,500 or so.

I gotta ask this really quick, you thought that "off the line" in the STI was slow? Or not on par with your ITR?

Dude, how did you launch it? When I first launched my STI hard, I revved the **** up, and clutch dumped it. No joke, it felt like being shot out of a friggin' gun. Now I'm not saying that it's a better car, but as far as off the line goes, I have NEVER driven anything else that went off the line like an STI.

Just my $.02 ---- in my opinion though, I'm die hard Honda, so I'd say stick with the R. If you HAVE to get another car (or at least are going to get a second) I like the EVO better, having driven both of them a lot. The STI feels put together better (more solid construction, beefier doors, that type of thing) but the EVO is just more FUN to drive. That is why it gets my vote. I'm a little one sided on that issue too though, as I'm looking to pick up an EVO soon.

I drove a modified WRX a while back, at track event I went to. The scooby felt like it is was going to slide out in a turn, but as soon as you nailed the throtle it would go were the steering wheel was pointed. It was definitly a different feeling then having the front wheels pull you around a turn.

I concur. The STI always gives me the feeling that it is gonna break the *** end loose around corners. I'm thinking that this only applies to people that have been driving FWD all their life. The AWD just seems like it's gonna slide. But I've pushed the hell outta the STI, and it always sticks. Glad it's not just me that felt that though. I thought I was going crazy.

my buddies got an sti and I've driven it a few times and I got to say its alot faster from a dig then my R. he gave me probably 6 cars and went by me before I hit second gear! but, like everyone else has said, this car handles weird. has plenty of body roll and feels heavy as ****, unlike the almighty R. if you wanna go fast in a strait line, buy an old dsm

they're like, COMPLETELY different cars

a turbo, 4wd 300bhp saloon, and an NA 1.8 front wheel drive 200bhp coupe

not even worth directly comparing them

off the line...oh ya, the STI is much quicker. I will say I was having some problems getting use to the clutch.....I've got an ACT on the R which I proceeded to stall twice on the way home right after I picked it up. It would take me a few more cruises to get used to it.

yup, noticed the weight as well

no plans to buy a new car though....7 years later I'm still very happy w/ it.

I'd like to drive an EVO as well but am not a fan at all of how it looks

Other than my first car...'65 Dodge Dart GT with green **** carpeting for mats I've had Hondas and Acura and no plans to switch once I do decide to buy a 2nd car....the R will never be sold.

Get a 2600 on the STi, you won't be concerned with the soft stock clutch anymore.
