hey guys i needed some help on my shocks. its prob a dumb question but my friend gave me some tokico shocks that i think came off a 00 civic. the only difference i saw was that on my oem one the bolt screws right into the the fork and on the ones my friend gave me it doesnt. will these work with just tightening it up with a nut? any comments or is that how its supposed to be? thanks

 

fronts are identical
rears the lower fork will be slightly narrower, spread it a little if you have to, and use a nut you will be fine.

 

Actually the fronts are physically the same size, but the EK ones have no mount for the brake hoses, so you'll need to secure your brake hoses via zip ties, metal hose clamps, etc. etc.

For the rears they are the same except for the narrower lower fork on the EKs - you will need to grind down the lower control arm bushing to provide the needed clearance to bolt the EK struts in. I don't think you can spread them quite enough to fit over the LCA and still fit a bolt through.

for all manufacturers? the illuminas I had didn't require that. neither did the Konis that I had breifly. both were the same part number for the EG as EK.

I think this does depend on the manufacturer. Depending on how they are made and just how much of a fork there is... you may be able to spread it fit on there, grind the bushing way to fit, or simply leave out with spacers that come with the set for the EK. (illuminas)

 

Well I've personally installed numerous sets of KYB AGX, Koni Yellows, and KYB GR-2 shocks on EG and EK cars and had to "make them work" vice versa for each car, and every time I ran into the brake hose and lower fork issues I listed.

I personally run a set of Koni Yellows intended for an Ek on my 1992 Civic, and I had to make brake hose mounts for the fronts, and grind away my lower control arm bushings (luckily mine are energy inserts without that damn metal sleeve in them) to make the rears fit.

 

so is it normal then to put a nut on the end instead of actually screwing it in into the actual fork

hmm, maybe I'm just lucky. there is a first time for everything.

some shocks come with the welded nut, some don't. not a big deal.
