NEED YOUR help on SMOG (FAILED x2)
my first test
running stock LS motor with a an AEM intake. everything else is stock. i did the seafoam, change my oil, plugs (0.44), wire,cap,rotor..time is at 18 degree, s2000 fuel pump, the whole IM has been clean. Gas used for the test 89 oct
second test
the referee said it might be the o2 sensor so i went back home and change them both out with the sohc engine (D16y7) and replace the fuel pump with the stock civic's. after changing these items the car ran different, it seem to pull harder...so i thought everything was fine, but the result showed that it wasnt...however those o2 sensors has once used in a turbo setup..could that have ruin the o2 sensor causing the HC and the CO to shoot up so high compared to the first test?
any idea??please help me out...i am one step away from getting my motor BAR'D...please help!!!

High NO means you were probably running lean (hot). The new fuel filter probably fixed that and you're probably running richer (cooler). With high HC and CO, you are probably running without enough spark or the timing might be off.

When is the last time you changed your spark components (i.e. spark plugs, wires, rotor, distributor)? Seems like you have incomplete combustion.

catalytic converter and exhaust play a huge roll
check how your cat is and even maybe check your exhaust muffler
worse comes to worse i heard a certain type of alcohol can lower the emissions by burning more oxygen with no harm to your engine (just one bottle per tank)
might look into that as well

Methyl or ethyl alcohol will increase your chances of passing, but don't let it sit in the tank for long. I'm not sure if isopropyl will work the same.

second test says you failed in hydro carbons isnt that caused by rich? first he was too lean now he's too rich?
maybe reset the ecu and try it one more time

i know for sure that my 99 prelude wasnt passing cuz i did reset my ecu while i was tuning up my car b4 i went and got it smog and it failed on me. if this is the case just drive it around for about 30-45min then go and smog u should pass it.

Seafoam will stay in your oil and reduce compression. Change your oil to a thicker grade like 10W30.
So you changed your spark equipment, then it could be you are running rich. Perhaps you could switch back to your other O2 sensor. How about your timing? You'll probably see black stuff out of the exhaust during high revs if you're running rich.
Also change out your PCV valve and use a Honda PCV valve.
Before your next smog test, run it for a good half hour on the highway.

Have you changed the catalytic converter? I'm pretty sure if yo change/fix it, you will pass. It's always those damn cats!!

Re: (Historyg)
I'd doubt it's a CAT problem. It seems you have incomplete combustion or you're running rich. Either your timing is out a bit or it's your O2 sensor. Also switch to a Honda PCV if you haven't already. Unburnt gas that blows by the rings will benefit from this.
My 15year old d15b7 engine with 435,000km burns and leaks oil badly and it passed in the dead of winter with the original CAT!

If your thermostat is stuck open, you could also be running rich and it will take longer for the engine to heat up to it's optimal temperature.

One sug. Timing. Is 18btdc your spec for that motor? 18 is the spec on a D16a6. I think 16btdc is your spec. But it might be 12btdc. Not sure! What year is the motor so I can find it out for you.
If I were you I would go back to the first set of O2's and set the timing correctly.
15mph test is done with a 50% load of the vehicles weight
25mph is done with 25% load. The 15mph is the tougher of the two because of the load and most cars fail the 15mph.
