I dont know a whole lot about welding but I wouldnt even reccomend the gasless unit. Tell us more about what you are interested in using the machine for. Maybe consider saving a few hundred more dollars and buying a slightly more capable machine. In the long run you may save money because you wont have to buy another better machine. If you start getting more and more interested in welding you that machine may just end up on a shelf. Just a few thoughts.

I have the 3200HD from the home depot. I've had it for 4-5 years now, and it works very very well!

I would try and get one thats 220 instead of 110, and one that allows gas hook ups. Both of those are good brands though so if you choose one I think you'll be happy with each, just compare the specs between the two.

I got a Miller 175 and I don't remember how much it cost but I don't think it was much more than that for just the welder.

Do what jcochran suggested. Get a machine that can have a gas hook up. I wouldn't go with a flux core only because the welds look like *** the majority of the time. Go MIG.

I would go with 220 and a gas set up for mig.. and I would have to go with lincoln just because you can always go your local weld shop and thay will always have spear parts for it... as for which model. the 3200hd is nice but for a lil more coin the sp125 or the sp175 are the ****...thay have better heat and wire speed control.. the only bad thing to buy these models you have to order them through lincoln. I own all three of these and thay all work very well!

Go for a gas-ready model - you will be much happier, no matter what kind of welding you are going to do. If you are dead set on not spending much, get a used one. I see used Lincoln/Hobart/Clarke mig welders on Craigslist all the time with gas kits for $300 - $400.

Best of luck with your project.
