I'm deffinatly not a pro. But from what i know they are very similar up to 4th and 5th. To me a b16 would be more for a track only application and a gsr for a daily driver. Just cuz you will get better gas milage, and have a better highway cruiz gear. this is just my opinion, and how i would do it.

i thought i had a little idea. Better acceleration and higher rpms at a highway cruiz. so you'll be in vtec just cruizing, which IMO kinda defeats the purpose of having it. I may have some miss info, but i thought 1st-3rd were the same anyway, if not the same pretty close to the same. Again that could be wrong but i'm willing to bet that given an identical motor set up and driver that it would be very close to top of third, if they are not the same. But as to which one is better will definatly depend on the goal of the project. I would have to say tho no matter what the plans are for the car, the b16 would be more agressive while the gsr would be better to still have an agressive gear ratio but a comfortable drive everyday.

i have a gsr tranny and i'd trade it for a b16 anyday. the gears are too long for my liking, but that's me. the extra few hundred rpm's for highway cruising with a b16 arent that big an issue. at 80mph you'd be at ~4300rpm compared to a gsr which is 4000rpm. and you wont be cruising in vtec unless you're above a certain throttle position.

man get a gsr, if your gonna boost someday, trust me gsr is best of both worlds. short and quicker than ls but longer than an all track b16.
i hate b16 for street unless i got a b20vtec all motor just for street with lsd.

Exactly, why would yoiu be doin 120 in a DD? To get a fat *** ticket? If the Si's came with them, then why wouldn't the be fine for a DD. Honda didn't intead for that tranny to be strictly for track, they designed it to be a DD with a little "git up and go." If you want a short geared, slappin hella vtak tranny, and most important, mAd 3Rd GeAr PuLl Yo,you'll get the b16tranny. It will respond way better to the torque we ls/v's have, and they the **** to move our heavy *** dc's

an LS w/ a B16 tranny would suck *** IMO. I'd go w/ the GSR.

Think about this...the B16a needs a tranny that is closely geared because it makes no torque, but revs high. The GSR makes more torque and revs almost as high so the gears are longer. The LS makes more torque than both and therefore has the longest gearing in order to use the torque it makes. GSR tranny would be the obvious choice
(i'm hungover so if that doesn't make any sense, deal w/ it)

Go with the B16 tranny unless you are planning on making a lot of horsepower down the road.

Just for reference, when crusing at 80mph in 5th

GSR trans = 4000 rpm

B16 trans = ~4400 rpm (maybe ~4500, can't remember which 5th gear the hydro B16s have)

so you are looking at ~400 rpm at 80mph. there is less difference if you cruise slower, and more as speeds increase.

Yup. I gotta S4C out of a 00 SI and would trade it in a second for a GSR tranny for just that reason. I HATE the fact that my car has to wind out so much when I'm going 80, its DEAFENING with my dual resonated 2.5" exhaust, and it can't be good for the motor. Go with the GSR tranny unless this is going to be a track car

For N/A id definitely have to go with the b16 tranny over the gsr. The gsr is a better compromise for a daily driver though as it keeps the rpm lower but on a n/a setup shorter gears really do help. I wouldnt mind daily driving with a b16 tranny at all. I usually stay between 60-65mph on the highway anyways so you guys and your 80mph bs can GTFO =]
