setup opinions..what ya think
watsup fellas,
i recently purchased a RF Punch P3 and the new punch 1000-1 mono amp to run it, in a sealed q-logic box (i get a good discount from my job on car audio stuff
). I have been reading some mixed reviews on the P3 mostly negative. i've been running the setup for about 1 week now and i like it. should i have gotten the Alpine type R instead??
I need some better mids/high though, getting infinity 6 1/2 kappa componets and 6x8 kappa compents in the back. don't now about the amp yet though, it'll most likely be an infinity four channel.
i'm also running a pioneer 5900mp headunit.
whats your opinion/recommendations on this setup?? i'm a little new to car audion and more focused on sound quality than loudness/bass.

From the equipment you're describing, I take it you work at Best Buy?
I used to like the P3's... Properly powered, they slammed pretty good in a sealed box.
Sounds like you're making some good choices in the equipment that's available to you...

If you want more sound quality don't get rear speakers and focus on the installation of the component set in the front. And get a 2 channel amp to power the component set. What car is this equipment going into?
its going into an 01 prelude...why shouldn't i get rear speakers?
i know that a majority of sound comes from the front speakers but, seeing how the rears are components wouldn't that help the sound quality a bit?

Nope. If you're going for true SQ, the rears will screw with your soundstage...

Nope....the only thing that matters is what you think of the sound and if you like it you made a good choice. I would focus on the install and not so much about the equipment. Crappy speakers installed properly will generally sound much better than high-end speakers installed improperly.
Start small and then let the hobby grow

You know
With the right processor with time delay rear speakers are absolutely fine
I know most decks are not going to offer this, but for smaller cars without enough room to build up a proper front stage a little more money on a deck with time delay will work just as well

mmm...I'd have to disagree w/ this; however, I'd be interested to know your crossover settings. If you've got highs coming from the rear it's bad news. Any concert any symphony.....I've been to my fair share and I've never seen speakers behind me and is partially why so much time goes into the design of symphony halls....you don't want sound reflecting from rear of the hall and eventually into your ears. Same goes for home speakers....unless you're setting things up for theatre you have 2 speakers front and center and that's it. To be honest even having subs in rear causes problems and this is why some people (Earl Zausmer for instance) have every speaker up front. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2615 I can't remember his board name but over on Elite Car Audio there was an install in a SUV and he placed a sub in the area between passenger and driver seat.
In terms of placement up front, factory locations for mid-bass/bass should be ok.....for midrange and tweets though I'd first look at how well the speakers perform off-axis. Let this partially guide your decision about placement. You can build custom kick-panels or look at something like the Q-Form enclosures.
In my current setup I've got mids down in kicks, mid-bass in factory location in doors and tweets in A-Pillars. Ideally though you should have mids and tweets as close to one another as possible. Although it's rare there are some songs where I notice a "rainbow" effect. At top layer is highs, middle layer is mids. I've got to be listening very carefully and have just the right song to hear it though.
Let theory partially guide placement but in the end choose a loc that sounds best to you. I would highly recommend hooking up the speakers to amp and then play around with locations. For instance, set the tweeters on the dash and listen and then compare the sound if they were located in doors
You'll know you've got it right when your soundstage starts at your hood to give a bit of depth to the music you listen to.

ok that makes sense..somewhat. my concern i guess was if just the from speakers would be able to keep up with the bass that was being put out by the sub.
ok cool so end of the month i'm gonna try to pick up the kappa componets w/ the 2ch amp and some 6x9 refs powered by the headunit and see how it sounds. if the back interferes, i'll just turn them off from the headunit (neat little feature i found on the headunit). I'm also gonna play around with the mounting locations for the tweeters.
