Default What is this engine part?

heater core?

I have a 1996 Honda Accord, and it seems to be spraying or loosing antifreeze from somewhere around this part. I cannot see a leak in a hose or anything, unless I just missed a hose. I hope that I'm just overlooking a hose that has a hole in it, because I don't know much about this car or how to work on it, I just got it and I'm kinda dumb about this sorta stuff, I'm 4 hours away from my dad and I was hoping I could fix the car myself...if you guys could tell me what this is, it would help me describe the location of it to my dad, or if you guys could suggest possible ideas as to whats wrong - IS there a hose under that that I am just overlooking? or some key element to the piping down there?

there is a heater hose below the distributor ( pictured ) ,, i have seen them go bad a lot. you might want to pressure test the cooling system, it will show where the leak is at..

If you are circling the black and grey part with the white sticker, that is your starter, the heater core is inside the car under the dash, very long job for that one, the starter is 30 minutes max.

EDIT
The large black radiator hose running above the starter goes around the corner to the thermostat housing, your hose might be leaking there or the TStat housing gasket or a sensor leak or as mentioned, another hose. Couple of little hoses may be running up to the throttle body also.

as far as I could tell the steam was coming from around the starter, or maybe under it. It was not coming from the large radiator hose you can see there. My mom said the starter may be going bad, the cars got 250,000 miles on it and everything is ready to be replaced. but it does not make sense to me that it would have anything to do with this problem, so perhaps there is just a hose loose or pinched under this? is there a radiator hose diagram somewhere? ill search when i get back, but i have to run to class now, thanks for all your help so far

there is a smaller coolant hose that is sorta located under the distributor area. Try looking at that one. A friend with a 94-95 EX just replaced that hose this past weekend because it was leaking.

I'll see if I can find a diagram for you.

Directly behind the starter there are to coolant lines that go into your fire wall. They are your heater hoses. They are hard to see with the intake on the car. If you remove the black hose(intake) from the Throttle body you should be able to get a better look.

This is what the heater hoses look like coming from the fire wall.

Sorry I don't have an actual pic of then with me right now.

I think my friend replaced #2 in the diagram below but it was dark when I got there and he was finishing up so I dont recall exactly.
