Default 5th Gen JRSC exhaust question.

I just had a world sport (universal) installed this morning, and to my dismay, it's louder than the old HKS N1 style that was on it. It's quiet at idle, and anything above that is what I would call "ricey". You know, super raspy and kinda high pitched. Before it was deep and sounded decent, just too loud.

So I'm now ~$300 into this world sport, so I'd hate to turn around and remove it. The exhaust is: DC 4-2-1(i know, i know), 2.5" pipe, no cat, 15" resonator, world sport. It's no longer my daily driver, but I'd sure like to hear the jackson whine from time to time

Any suggestions on what I could do to tone it down a notch or two? High flow cat? Another resonator? The world sport has always been touted as a fairly quiet muffler, so I'm not sure what else to do, short of cutting it off and welding up a shitty looking flowmaster or something. Had I known the WS was not a chambered unit, I would have stayed away.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't think that cat keeps the sound down that much.

So Evil, I take it you feel that adding a cat will help bring down the volume? I'm certainly willing to try it. I'll try anything right about now.

a cat acts as a resonator and filters the gases coming from the engine. On a street motor, why not use a cat?

keep our air clean.

Desire for power?

I recall Dave's 200 cell cat flow testing pretty well, compared to a 2.5in straight pipe it wasn't terrible. Much better than the usual rectangle ones.

Isn't the universal WS a straight-through deal? If so it's not going to be particularly quiet.

Yes, it is a straight-through design. I'm kicking myself for not catching that small detail before ordering. I guess I can always cut it off and sell it, it's got all of 5 miles on it, lol.

The question is, what to replace it with. I'm sure a 3 chambered flowmaster or something similar would be much more quiet, just wouldn't look as good.

Well, right now it's loud enough to get me a ticket. I just can't believe that it's louder now than with an N1. It's way more raspy, and higher pitched. I think I'll weld in a cat and hope that makes it tolerable. I just need to find a decent cat now I guess.

I had a stock catalytic converter right after the stock headers with the EVO IIs which have there own high flow cat. The sound was amazing even in high rpm. Then i put a high flow cat and aftermarket headers and now in high rpm i scream for rice. Sooo, if you want to lower the sound violation, get a stock cat and let go of thos 2-8 hp .

For anyone else that was looking for exhaust answers/suggestions as I was, I thought I'd update this thread with my outcome.

I ended up leaving the WS on, and I removed the straight-through type resonator that was on and replaced it with a chambered resonator (following the advice of my exhaust guy) and OMG what a difference.
With just a res swap I went from a terribly loud, ricey, raspy, overall shity sound to an angry sounding, zero rasp sonic bliss. I can finally hear the JRSC whine as it should be, and cruise quietly at low throttle. It's now exactly what I had in mind and I couldn't be happier with the outcome.

What kind of chambered resonator? Fits in the OEM location? (ie, size)

Fits in stock location. I believe it was 18" (24" overall), 2.5" in/out. I'll get a brand/model next time I talk to the mechanic.
