Default advise please - Replacing timing belt and belt tensioner?

Mechanic says $400 to replace timing belt and tensioner along with a new valve cover gasket. I am inclined to yet again whip out my jackstands and air hammer.

Do you really need to replace the tensioner at 105k miles? This will be the first timing belt change. How long on average is this job?

it is recommended to replace the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump all at the same time. it took me 2hr to do, and that was me taking my time.

if you plan on doing this yourself, take the $400 and buy a oem (dealer) water pump ($75) and a repair manual ($15). then with the remaining money send me $50 for giving you the advice , and then take your lady out to a nice restaurant.

You should just change the tensioner also along with the waterpump now while changing the timing belt & save the labor/time of having to replace the tensioner/water pump later.

At 105k the tensioner is fine. The race's has 216,000 miles on it.

The valve cover gasket is rubber and is reusable.

You have air tools, do it yourself.

Buy the timing belt and water pump from http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com

Even the water pump is a may be.

Might as well replace the alternator belt and other belts while they are off.

I see you live in LA OP. Buy your stuff from SLhondaparts.com

Most of the prices on the internet are all the same, and SL is Nor Cal so it will take about 2 days to ship if they have the parts in stock.
