Need Advice on Drive Shaft Oil leaking
So i took my 02 type S to my friends shop to get coilovers installed and he told me that my driveshaft was worn out and leaking motor oil NOT tranny oil. How is this possible since the driveshaft is part of my tranny. He told me that his dad will be rebuilding it for about 450 dollars. I really need advice on this since i know very little about drive shaft and axles etc and if iam over paying.... Sorry I know this is a noob question
Your S wont have a driveshaft cuz it is front wheel drive. If they were talking about the axles then i would say that it would have to leak from the transmission since axles arent filled with oil. Def. may want to climb under the vehicle and check it out yourself or even better get them to show you! Look for places the leak could be coming from or if there even is one.

The driveshafts are connected to the tranny not the engine so it would be leaking tranny oil.

All of these guys are wrong. Your car has two axles, the driver side axle connects directly to the tranny and the passenger side axle connects to the drive shaft. I would take your car to a nother shop tho, the only fluid that can leak from your drive shaft would be tranny oil.

If you actually read my post you would see that i wrote axleS. This is plural which means there are 2 or more(by English definition) and obviously since there are 2 drive wheels, 2 axles! If i am correct, which i believe i am they call the "driveshaft" which the passenger axle connects to is refered to as an intermediate shaft. Using correct terminology helps people understand the situation better. I was stating this because it seems as if the company could be trying to charge for services which arent needed! Oh, and i also stated the leak would come from the transmission if there even is a leak around the axles.

Your right...Its referred to as the intermediate shaft or half shaft.
I was wrong however axles are commonly referred to as driveshafts. My mistake.

No problem, i guess that just goes to show that many people use different words for the same part. Kinda find it wierd that a shop wants $450 for rebuild of the axles when you can buy upgraded axles for the same or a little bit more money.
Is it grease coming from the boots or is it leaking oil from the axle seals ? Most likely it sounds like you have a axle seal leak. Or since it's a pita to change oil on our cars you could just have some left over oil from an oil change on your axle.

I agree. Sounds like he told you the rack and pinion will go bad so you dont try to drive it to a more credible shop. Go to his shop, put your hand in the air with palm facing you, now lower fingers 1 2 4 and 5. Find new "friends".
