Default Spark Plug Orientation?

I remember reading a thread about how the orientation your spark plugs are facing can make a bit more power. Does anyone have the link or can anyone shed some light on this. I believe I remember rocket breaking down some knowlegde on this issue, i just don't remember if they should face intake or exhaust side.

The ground strap should point towards the pulley or flywheel.

mark the side on which the "open end" of the spark plug faces. Proceed to install them as you normally would. use your ratchet to tighten the plug until the open end of the plug, faces the intake side of your cylinder head.

How much power are we talking about here? I personally think it might help against a too lean miss fire but i doubt it would give you or prevent you from losing power once the bang started.

This is the correct one. It is called indexing. The open side toward the intake.

Maybe one hp.

From the NGK website:

4. Indexing

This is for racers only !!
Indexing refers to a process whereby auxiliary washers of varying thickness are placed under the spark plug's shoulder so that when the spark plug is tightened, the gap will point in the desired direction.

However, without running an engine on a dyno, it is impossible to gauge which type of indexing works best in your engine. While most engines like the spark plug's gap open to the intake valve, there are still other combinations that make more power with the gap pointed toward the exhaust valve.

In any case, engines with indexed spark plugs will typically make only a few more horsepower, typically less than 1% of total engine output. For a 500hp engine, you'd be lucky to get 5hp. While there are exceptions, the bottom line is that without a dyno, gauging success will be difficult.

Anyone have any data or experience to support a given plug orientation on Honda motors?

or the open end of the plug, faces the intake side of your cylinder head ?

I've always heard face the open end towards the intake valves. With how deep down they are on our motors it is a pain in the *** and I have never done it for that reason. Tightening them down until they are facing the correct direction just sounds like a great way to overtighten them. That you you pull the plug out again and rotate it then start threading it into the hole again.

As stated before, it varies on different setups
Most like the ground strap towards the exhaust..

Not really soomethin you want to put too much thought into. Results aren't worth the effort, your better off worrying about the heat range.
