Default trouble fitting alpine type-r speakers

I just bought a pair of Alpine Type-R 6 1/2 speakers and I have trouble installing them on my 98 civic front door panels. They don't fit because the magnet is too big. Is there a way to customize the panel, perhaps cut something off? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

The type R's used to come with a 1" plastic speaker ring that replaced the old plastic pod and used the three mounting points and you just put in a screw and you were good, with a little sealing with abs plastic, hot glue, and some dynamat.

The instructions are kind of crappy on the alpine speakers. I do have that plastic speaker ring thing you're talking about, but I'm kinda clueless on how to use it. So does that mean I won't have to cut off anything of the door panel?
Can anyone tell me how to install it step by step?

Thanks

The Alpine Type R speakers are over-sized 6.5" speakers, your car takes a standard size 6.5" speaker, the main diff. between the two is the mounting hole diameter needed, the stock speaker uses a 5" mounting hole diameter, the Alpine is something silly like 5-13/64".
The other big diff. is mounting depth, stock is just a hair under 2" the Alpine is more then that, and as you have noticed the magnet structure is much bigger on the Alpine, it also adds mounting depth issues because of the shape of the stock plastic speaker housing.

There are a few things that can be done, the best way by far is to replace the stock plastic speaker housing with a custom MDF housing.

You can also get away with a "MDF depth reducing ring". 94

Sorry I'm still kind of lost. What do you mean by replace the stock plastic speaker housing with a custom MDF housing and where can I buy this housing? Would I have to cut apart anything and melt on something? Thanks

what fcm is saying in a nutshell, is the plastic behind you grill will need to be trimmed as to allow for a custom mdf mount to be made and secured in between the doors metal and the door panel. you will need to trim carefully if you wish to retain the oem grill. or you can make your own custom mdf piece that replaces the entire grill assembly that will allow you to use the type r grill. excellent choice in speakers though. when paired with a good headunit and amp those speakers can sound extremely good. im not an alpine fan by any means, but i give credit when due.

Thanks</TD></TR></TABLE> The stock front speakers, [standard 6.5"] are mounted to/in a plastic speaker housing that in turn is mounted to the door.
The stock plastic speaker housing is designed to house a standard 6.5" speaker that is just under 2" deep and uses a 5" diameter mounting hole .

The Alpine speaker will not fit because it is 2-5/16" deep and needs a 5-11/32" diameter mounting hole.

The best possible way to install the Alpine speakers, [to get the best possible performance out of them] is to replace the stock plastic speaker housings with custom MDF, [medium density fiberboard, what sub boxes are made from].

I know of no place that sells them, you will have to make them, or have them made.

You will need some basic woodworking skills along with some basic wood working tool.

Custom MDF housings are made up of 2 or more layers of MDF, starting with a 1/2" mounting plate, [this is the piece that will mount to the door] it has the same shape as the part of the stock plastic housing that mounts to the door, and will use the same mounting locations, the rest of the custom MDF housing is made of MDF "rings" with an outside diameter the same as the speakers overall diameter, [or a little bigger] the inside diameter, [mounting hole diameter] will be 5-11/32",
how many "rings" and thickness of rings will depend on the mounting depth you need.
To determin thickness/number of rings you first make the mounting plates and mount them to the doors, measure from the surface/outside of the plate to the window or window guide, say that is 1-1/4", , you need 2-5/16", you need another 1-1/6", so you would use a 1" and a 1/4" thick ring to make up the diff.

The two rings would be glued together and glued to the mounting plate, all 3 pieces stacked together would be 1-3/4" deep/thick.

There are some other things that need to be done, feel free to IM me if you need more help. 94
