older Alpine crossovers
Ok, well one of my spr-176a (type r) door speakers has blown. My question is will it be ok to install newer type-r speakers off of the older type-r crossovers currently in there?
The guy I talked to at alpine said that the newer type-r speakers have better technology and I would need the newer crossovers to support them. Said I should buy the newer sps-600c set with crossovers, little tweeters and door speakers.
Is he just trying to get me to spend more money I don't need to?
I just want to replace the door speakers the tweeters and crossovers are fine

He is correct, the passive x-overs are specific to the speakers they cross over and although the old ones would work, they would not be exactly right, cross over points will be diff. as well as slope.
You do know that any component speakers you get will come with x-overs, right?

I doubt that alpine would change the slope and xo point for newer speakers. But even if they did, the numbers wouldn't be far off. If he were replacing tweeters, then having the proper XO point and slope would be something to worry about, but crossing over a mid a little higher or lower wouldn't matter too much.
