Default Burning oil...Strage noise,B16

Friends B16, Is making a strange noise, it sounds like like somthing is rattling around inside the engine, some people say belt tensioner or water pump, some say rod bearing...

Is there anyway to tell what it really is, ( besides ripping the engine apart)

Also, the Car burns oil, its not a high mileage engine eithers, its from h motors with like 70k on it

A compression test will show the status of the piston rings, and a leak down test will show if theres a valve stem seal leak?

I only have a compression tester, how do i go about doing the leak down test with it

Rod bearing or wrist pin would be an easy guess. But without hearing it in person, know one can tell. I'm sure I could (along with others on here) identify exactly what the noise is if we heard it in person. Are you sure it's not valvetrain noise? I've also seen things like washers, nuts, bolts, etc. dropped into the head and make noise from vibration.

if you can't really tell were it's comming from i know an old trick to help. take a screwdriver (preferably as long of one as you can find) stick it against your/his head and put your ear against it. it works. and if you can't hear the ticking any better move it to different parts of the engine.

Or not noticing a nut or bolt that fell in the crankcase before putting the oil pan back on after reassembly. But probly a bearing.

I'm also an MR2 owner and on that forum (mr2oc.com) Hyde (a 635rwhp gt35'd beast) wasn't taking to timming well so they open'd up the motor and someone had dropped a nut or bolt in there . . the block, pistons, valves, and head were trash with hundereds on dings. they didn't notice the noise while they were tunning so i doubt you would hear that.
