Default rpm gauge going nutz whats happening?

i have a 1996 civic dx

i swapped the dx cluster to an ex cluster.
it was working fine until like 5 days ago (been in there for over a month now) the tach started jumping for joy all of the sudden. i start the car up and it goes all the way around and it stays there for while then it goes back to normal.. then when im driving once in a while it goes crazy again..
here is the evidence

20mph @ 8000rpms...LMAO ******* rice
and idling @ almost 3000rpms

yet the car runs really smooth and the engine is idling normal..

im thinking the distributor is going bad.. but wouldn't the car be acting up?
in my forum their saying its a bad ground which makes more sense.. but yet idk
i cant find where the ground for the distributor is located..
the engine is a d16y7..

anyone know or had this problem b4? ive searched but came up empty.. idk if im searching on the right word or topic

any help would be appreciated
thx

Im thinking that its a ground. The grounds for the distributor are located on the thermostat. Take them off and get the connections clean.

Does this happen only when your engine is on? Or does it happen when the cars in the ON position. If it happens with engine on, then its early signs of ignitor issues. If it happens in the ON position then its something in your wiring (possibly ground or power wire).

Check the power wire on the top of your alternator.
