Default Fuel Pump Idea

First, it's not a honda, it's a 1991 Talon AWD, and my friends and I are building it up for the $2007 challenge held by Grassroots Motorsports. We need to upgrade the fuel pump but cannot afford to fit a nice $100+ Walbro. What I was wondering is it possible to get a totally non-related pump, say from a large pick-up truck, mount it in the trunk and re-route the lines and wiring to it. (Note: The existing fuel pump is located under the trunk bed not the back seat like some hondas.)

It seems like it should work logistically speaking as all it really is is a pump and shouldn't know better as to what type of vehicle it should be in...

What are your guys opinions on this type of solution?

Some pumps are cooled by the gas around them, something to consider. If it came in-tank, mount it in-tank. Just modify the bracket to hold it, it'll work. Be sure to get the pickup at the same height as stock or it might suck when the gas level gets low.

Look for a friend with a Evo or Supra or find someone with one that may have upgraded they come with decent sized pumps

Yeah, do a supra pump or just a stock pump rewire. I don't know what your intentions or power levels are going to be, but a stock pump rewire can get you farther than you may think in those cars. Also, spending a little time reducing restrictions in the fuel line system...this can get you a good percentage more flow. Plus, time is free.

my knowledge of factory fuel pumps is limited but based on my knowledge of vw's i may be able to help here.

if you can find mk1 VW's in your area (i.e. pre 92 golf/gti/scirocco<yay!!> ) and they are 16v cars, then they have two fuel pumps in them and produce alot of pressure. if im not mistaken fuel pressure at the distributor (fuel distributor, theyre mechanical injection) is somewhere between 70-80psi. quite higher than what your stock pump could do (i think??) hope this helped

They actually run 90psi, but the pumps are very expensive, and junkyard pumps are prone to failure. They are found on ALL Pre-92 Watercooled VWs, not just the 16v's. Look for a Rabbit pump, thats the model you need, its similar to the Bosch 020 pumps.

if you can't afford the 100 walboro, how are you going to afford the 300-400 injectors that you need in order to make power?

$20 or whatever in bungs and $50 for 4 more stock injectors? and id use a second stock fuel pump tied to the original pump and Y the lines together in-tank. id love to do this kind of challenge, $100 desiel turbo (hx35/40) or something along those lines, welded to the stock manifold haha. $200 on a used megasquirt or something like that. $100 ebay intercooler and another $100 some mild steel pipes and good clamps/couplers. if you spend your time and money right you could probably end up with a pretty fast ghetto car.

Find a used stock pump from a 3000GT VR4. Their rated at like 225lph and will require a very small amount of modification to mount on the existing assemble.

550's from a MKIV Supra or from RX-7 are less that $100.
