Default Odd Idle Question

Hello everyone!

I just put a clutch in a car that I just bought and it fired up first try. The only funny thing is that the idle bounces from 1000 to about 1200 RPM really quickly. It doesn't seem to go away when it warms up or anything, so I'm really not sure! The car is a 1995 Accord DX with the 2.2L non-vtec motor. Let me know if you guys have any suggestions for me!

Thanks,
Chris

Try adjusting the idle. I'm not sure if the idle is electronically set in the ECU on the 5th gens.

How would I check that? I'm assuming it would be on the intake manifold somewhere, but and ideas? I would think that it would be that or a sensor on the intake manifold, but I don't really know where to begin.

Thanks!

Sounds more like a vacuum leak. Check all of your vacuum lines to make sure one didn't come loose or crack during the clutch replacement procedure.

It is a vacuum leak, just not thetype you normally think of like a hose leak or an intake gasket leak, its a leak around the throttle plate, the engine is getting too much air, turn down the air bypass screw, first clean up the throttle body and the edges and back side of the throttle plate. It could be a bad IAC or a leaky FICV if you have one, its adjustable but not recommended, if its bad then it should be replaced.

The idle surges due to the fuel cut strategy built into the ECM, its supposed to do it when there is too much air getting in at idle, (TPS at idle). Is your throttle (bare) cable a little sloppy at idle, it should be.

You are saying it surges when the engine is stone cold after sitting all night too. It should not. Only after it starts to warm up, a couple of minutes at least.

I am having the same problem. I have a 2000 Honda Accord and it ran fine until last Thursday. I drove it up to get the oil changed, and I had a new air filter put in. I drove across the street to work and the idle problem began. It idles in park from 1 -2k repetitively. I placed the car in reverse and the idle dropped to a steady 900, down to neutral and it started idling erratically again, down to drive and it leveled off at 1k. I decided I would drive it around the parking lot giving it stop and go's, trying to trip it up - see if it might be transmission related - and only found that when my speed came to between 1k and 2200 in any gear, usually coasting or slowing down, the car would cycle very quickly in the same erratic fashion, but when I come to a stop it levels out again. I tried removing the air intake and spraying Throttle body cleaner inside - nothing - then I tried flushing the system with Sea Foam - lots of smoke but no change in the idle. If it's a vacuum hose, I don't know where to start, but I would much rather fix it myself if I can. *The air filter wasn't that dirty when they replaced it but I thought I would just get it done now so I would have to worry later; does anyone think that might have something to do with the spontaneous change in idle coinciding with the replaced air filter?*

YES, adjust idle screw with wide blade common screwdriver but thin blade. The adjustment screw may be a little difficult to see sometimes, upper back corner of the throttle body housing.

Did you hook up the sea foam to a vacuum hose or prior to the throttle body.

I was going to take the intake manifold apart and clean everything really well here in the next few days. I will also try adjusting that idle screw and see if that helps. Thanks for all the advice! I will let you know what happens and if this is the fix!
