Default Thoughts on single layer HG

been going thru different setup choices for the last few months. Think I've finally decided to go with this setup.

GSR head(stock, slight port)
GSR block(jdm 10:6 compresiion)
OEM single layer headgasket(comp should be around 11:0-11:1)
GSR TB bored to 65mm
OG skunk2 manifold port matched
Blox type A cams
CAI
P72 ecu tuned on chrome.

The will be used daily in the summer months, and for hpde/autox events. Will I run into piston/valve clearance since every thing is stock? And sicne only using blox A cams, once tuned should every thing still be okay since these cams are not that aggressive? Will there be any issues with overheating running a 1layer?

Any info will be greatful, TIA.

You'll be fine with clearance, but why not run some bigger cams like BC 4, Blox B's, S2 pro 1's, M22x? Your build looks good and would make more power with cams like these.

Thanks'

Well actually it's going to come down to if I buy my old integra back, which now has a built b20/vtec. So i was going to do a mild build with this motor I have now going in a lil90 hatch. So if I get my integra back, I would go with bigger cams on that setup.

I got my teg back witht the above setup, but with a 3layer HG and the head milled 0.020. So my comp is around 11.1. I havent picked up a set of cams yet, but I'm leaning towards the blox type b or s2s2 now. I'm also thinking of going with the single layer HG at the time of the cams/vt install. That would raise my comp to around 11.7. My question now, would there be any piston to valve clearance running the blox b's or s2s2 cams with the 1layer HG and head being milled .020?

nice build man but you shouldnt run into any problems as long as u dont abuse it and got to go with bigger cams

nope. you should still have plenty of clearance with that setup. Tune your cam gears on the dyno.

thanks for the info. After using a 1lyr HG and putting the motor back together. Will the gears need to be degreed in order to get a smooth idle. I plan to tune the gears on the dyno, but I might have to drive the car to the dyno. Thats why I ask If the gears will need to be degreed before hand. Also will the stock gsr timingbelt fit since with the 1lyr HG and milled head?

Sorry for all the questions, just want to do it right and not have and mishaps or down time.

The way you roughly estimate it is this: Every layer of a head gasket is roughly .010" (thou). You add up how many thou the head has been planed, or how many thou the block has been decked, or how many layers (thou) your head gasket has less than three and add them up. When you get to .040" (thou) or 1mm, you advance your cam gears 1 cam degree (equals 2 crank degrees) to "correct" your timing (zero your cams). If everything added up to .060" (thou) you would advance 1.5 cam degrees. You would then set your ignition timing back to its base at 16-18 degrees and your cams would be very close to being zero'd and ready for tuning on the dyno. Unless you're running a cam with modified primaries (any of the S2 pro series cams, RM22xx, Toda cams etc) your car should run/idle fairly close to stock since the primaries on most cams are stockish. That's assuming that the manufacturer of whatever cams you've installed has told you to install them at a 0'0' position and then start tuning. As long as you carefully tune your cams/gears on the dyno, you'll make good power and are unlikely to run into interference issues.

My own experiance with a 1 layer HG goes as follows with no problems.

B16 head w/dual valve springs
Used 1 layer from oem HG
98' ctr camshafts/aem gears
Arp headstuds
Skunk2 pro series IM
Bored gsr TB
B18B block/gsr girdle
Kms 82mm Gsr pistons

Great torque and vtec hits like my sk2stg2's. Good luck with the build

So with my head being milled 0.020 thou, and running 1lyr roughly around 0.010 thou, that should be a total close to 0.030 thou. Since that is less than the 0.040 thou total, would the cam gears even need to be dialed in? This would raise my comp to around 11.6-11.7:1 range which should be perfect for blox b's or sk2s2 cams.

With arp head bolts, I shouldnt run into any sealing issues if the head is properly torqued down and 1lyr sprayed with copper spray. With the 1lyr, what should the head be torqued to with the arp head bolts? Also what's better to use, the top or bottom layer of the gasket?

Thanks for all help and info.

I was always told to use the bottom layer with the copper spray. Use the factory torque specs, I believe you are suppose to run the car for a while and then re torque them.

Okay, what about the cam tuning part for my particular setup since it's not at or above the 0.040 thousand? Will the car still idle/run fine? Or with a total of 0.030 thou still need cam gear tuning?

Actually, you'd be at .040 exactly. The original gasket is 3 layers. You're taking 2 away(.020) and your head is milled .020. So advance 1 degree...
